There are many ways to make a Brunello. Some people age the wine in big, hulking botti, the kind of vessel that Ferruccio Biondi-Santi used more than a hundred years ago, to create an elegant wine of extreme longevity. Other people use more fashionable barriques, smaller wooden barrels that lend a kind of accessibility and a patina of recognizable, international structure. And still others use a combination of the two, protocol that bridges the Old World and the New, and gives a wine that, at its best, marries these two styles.

The founder of Cerbaiona, Diego Molinari, or the "Commander," as he was commonly called, chose to age his wines in the "old style" with Slavonian tonneaux, and for decades, these botti turned out Brunello that was long aging, rich, and powerful. A few years ago, the Commander decided to sell his Cerbaiona estate to a group, who vows to carry on using the traditional methods that Molinari started. Today, I'm excited to present a new allocation of 2009 Cerbaiona Brunello di Montalcino, a wine that dates from the time when Molinari was still in charge, and it is tremendously tasty.

Sitting in the La Croce zone in the eastern-central portion of Montalcino not too far from the legendary Biondi-Santi, Cerbaiona's vineyards rest at a slightly lower altitude, so Cerbaiona's grapes tend to ripen a little earlier, and sometimes more completely, and this ripening provides for a denser Brunello. The 2009 Brunello is a sleek, polished, elegant wine that thrums with life. This Brunello was a knockout upon release, but now with maturity, it's gorgeous!
