Le Macchiole’s Magnificent 2016 Messorio Debuts!
February 24, 2020
A Note from Sergio

Eugenio Campolmi, who passed away in 2002, authored something of a fairytale in founding his estate, Le Macchiole. A Bolgheri native, Eugenio was something of a hometown hero, and when he founded Le Macchiole, he created some of the world's most sought-after boutique wines, including the estate's outstanding Merlot bottling, Messorio. Back then, Le Macchiole's neighbors Tenuta San Guido and Tenuta dell'Ornellaia were making about 10,000 cases of their signature wines every vintage, while Eugenio produced just 400 cases of his handcrafted Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Franc. Those big estates dwarfed Eugenio's tiny upstart, yet Le Macchiole's wines held their own against the big boys.

Even when it was a very young estate, Le Macchiole's wines won favor with critics and connoisseurs and securing them became a challenge. I remember opening the shop in 1999 and at the top of my wish list was Le Macchiole's extraordinary Messorio, its showstopping Merlot; two decades later, nothing has changed. Under the guidance of Cinzia Merli, Eugenio's widow, and her team, Le Macchiole's wines remain cult inspiring and hard to find. Strong willed and resourceful, Cinzia is one of the great women in Italian wine. She carried on the work of the estate without missing a beat; her spirit imbues Le Macchiole's wines, gives them life, and showers them with love.

Today, I'm proud to debut Cinzia's terrific 2016 Messorio, an exquisitely focused embodiment of its banner growing year. People have been making a fuss over 2016's Super Tuscans--the year gifted winemakers with weather that was warm but not too hot, and a growing season that lasted longer than normal. These conditions usually produce ripe, explosive wines that grab you and don't let go. This '16 Messorio is a different animal. It slinks around its warm vintage, graceful and muscular and a little shy, but with a little time, this wine is going to be glorious. If you love classic Bolgheri Merlot, you need this wine. It's stunning.

A breathtakingly precise evocation of its temperate year, the ’16 Messorio is pure Merlot sophistication in a bottle. Layers and layers of crisp red fruits and brooding berries float with notes of smoky minerals, sandalwood, vanilla, blood orange zest, and touches of pressed violet petals, tapenade and earth in this wine’s captivating nose. This classically styled Messorio wraps its seductive fruits around austere, fine-grained tannins, while nervy acidity animates its textured, laser-focused finish. You’ll want to cellar your ’16 Messorio for a few years before enjoying it for decades. Deriving from the estate’s Vignone estate parcel, Merlot grapes ferment for about twenty days in concrete; the wine ages for 19 months in new oak barriques before resting in bottle for 20 months. Messorio is a classic example of Italian Merlot, a story of its Bolgheri terroir, clay and limestone soils, and maker's care. more info
