Delectable, Lush $39 Cabernet Franc from Boutique La Roncaia
February 25, 2020
A Note from Sergio

Native to France's Bordeaux but frequently grown in Italy, Cabernet Franc is like an overlooked family member--not as well known or as widespread as its children Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot, mostly because its offspring hold more cachet. Like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc provides wines with great structure and balance, and like Merlot, it's aromatic and complex; however, it's lower in tannins than the former and more herbal than the latter. Anyone who has had the pleasure of drinking Giuseppe Quintarelli's thoroughbred Cabernet Franc, Alzero, won't forget it, and Le Macchiole's Paleo Rosso, from Bolgheri, has rightfully been winning the love of connoisseurs around the globe. Cabernet Franc has a rightful home in Italy, and people who love the grape can find a lot of Italian wine to love.

Today, I'm delighted to present an IWM exclusive, La Roncaia's delectable and power-packed 2016 Cabernet Franc. La Roncaia is the Fantinel family's boutique estate that's located in the gentle hills of Friuli's Colli Orientali, a region much prized for its complex, ever-morphing microclimates and its ponca soils, a mixture of marl and sandstone that's studded with ancient marine fossils. People have been making wine in Colli Orientali since antiquity, and, like most of Friuli, its patchwork of international and indigenous grapes reveals the area's much-traveled history. The Fantinel family started making wine for their restaurants, so today's wine is naturally delicious. Fans of Cabernet Franc will love this wine, as will any wine-lovers who appreciate a nice big red. This under $40 La Roncaia Cab Franc is raring to go as soon as it hits your table, but it has the structure to rest nicely over the next couple of years.

A supple, balanced evocation of its Friulian terroir, this ’16 Cabernet Franc leaps from the glass with a profusion of juicy blue and black fruits, fresh loam, wild herbs, new leather, rose petals, and touches of bell pepper, cherry jam, and peppery spices. Chewy tannins, keen acidity, copious dry extract, and an herbaceous finish work in concert to create a delicious drinking experience. Seductive and herb-strewn, this food-friendly Cabernet Franc complements a wide variety of dishes, from spicy vegetable stews, to roasted meats, to hard cheeses. A cuvée of Cabernet Franc grapes deriving from marly soils grown in the hills of Nimis, grapes ferment for 15 days with natural yeasts in temperature-controlled steel, and the wine ages for 10 months in steel before the blend is assembled and bottled. more info
