Fiorano 1993 No. 32 Bianco, a Fairytale White from a Prince
February 4, 2019
A Note from Sergio

When most wine-lovers think of Malvasia, they think of sweet, appassimento wines or they think of Madiera, a fortified Portuguese wine that's often made from Malvasia. Many people consider Malvasia a "nothing" grape, if they think of Malvasia at all. But common wisdom can be misleading, because Malvasia, when carefully handled, can make gorgeous, long-aging, textured wines of incomparable beauty--take today's Fiorano 1993 No. 32 Bianco, for example.

A family of grape clones, Malvasia flourishes throughout Italy and, indeed, across the entire Mediterranean. Most enologists agree that the grape entered Italy from Byzantium, but where it entered is up to dispute; some argue the Veneto, while others make a case for Sardegna. In any case, the Malvasia grape, both red and white, is known for making deeply aromatic, very flavorful wines. A grape of multitudes, Malvasia is open to multiple interpretations, and the late, great Alberico Boncompagni Ludovisi, the Prince of Venosa made one of the very best Malvasia wines, his long-aging Bianco bottlings that drink with fairytale beauty.

The Prince didn't sell much (if any) wine during his lifetime. He poured his mythical wines at his own table, or he gave them away to friends. Before he died, this iconoclastic winemaker made sure that no one else would profit from his heart's labor: he ripped up his vines and put his remaining wines in the hands of Luigi Veronelli, a renowned wine critic. Veronelli honored me with a few of the Prince's bottle, and now I am pleased to present one to you. This Fiorano wine isn't for every palate, but those who "get" it will step into a wonderland where time stops, and Malvasia turns from an ugly duckling into a graceful, unforgettable swan.
