Antinori’s Luminous 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Returns!
February 5, 2020
A Note from Sergio

Let's be honest: for years Chianti was not awesome. But times have changed, and Chianti Classico has changed too! Chianti Classico's producers have worked hard to make their wine desirable to serious wine-lovers. They've changed the protocol for making it, drastically reducing yield limits, tossing out the white grapes that once were required (if you can believe it), requiring a high Sangiovese component, and using primarily indigenous Tuscan grapes in the blend. In 2014, the Consorzio del Vino Chianti Classico finalized a new DOCG designation, Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, a step above the Riserva bottling. It's another step in showing the seriousness of Chianti Classico, of raising it in the world's perception, and in highlighting the wine's potential longevity.

Today, I'm pleased to present a new allocation of Badia a Passignano 2016 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione, a benchmark vintage. Badia a Passignano is run by the Antinori family, Tusan winemakers for more than 600 years. Piero and his daughters devote the Badia a Passignano estate to making just this one Chianti Classico Gran Selezione bottling, and in 2016 this wine gleams, shimmers, and glows with the beauty of its landmark vintage. This '16 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is everything you want in a Sangiovese--it's juicy and earthy, singing with the soul and the sun of Toscana. It wraps you in its arms and doesn't want to let go, and it's going to drink for decades.
