“Flawless” Fontodi 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo
February 7, 2020
A Note from Sergio

Fontodi is kind of an idyllic estate, perching like a bird on a tree above the Conca d'Oro, the golden basin in Panzano, and from its perch, you see a perfect patchwork of striated vines, fluffy dots of olive trees, and patches of grass, all punctuated by snaking streams, rock formations and the occasional road. It's a unique microclimate, and there's a pretty strong argument to be made that Panzano is the finest subzone in Chianti Classico (although Montevertine in Radda might raise objection). When Fontodi gets an okay year, it makes remarkable wines, but when it's gifted with a perfect year, as it was in 2015, well, the wines are pretty damn near flawless.

Today, I'm excited to bring you Fontodi's 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo. If you love Fontodi's Flaccianello or Montevertine's Le Pergole Torte, that means you love finely made, serious Sangiovese wines, and this cru Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is superb. It's got everything you want from a world-class Sangiovese wine like seductive aromatics, super-ripe wild berry fruits, dusty tannins, cheek-piquing minerality, and keen acidity, but it also has that enigmatic "X" factor--that unmistakable elegance, that compelling sense of restraint, that mesmerizing sense of tension. These mysterious things grip you, make you sit up, and sniff the glass. This Gran Selezione forces you to slow down to take notice, and it's only going to get better.

Fontodi knocked it out of the park with its 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione--enjoy!
