Not only is this the best Chardonnay in Italy, but it might be the best Italian white. Deriving from Gaja’s almost nine-acre Treiso vineyard planted in 1979, this wine is named for Angelo Gaja’s oldest daughter, Gaia Gaja, and his grandmother, Clotilde Rey. Gaia & Rey ferments with naturally occurring yeasts, and ages for 6 to 8 months in oak barrels. This is an intensely age-worthy wine, developing tertiary notes of nuts, butter and caramel with age.
- Country: Italy
- Region: Piemonte
- Subregion/Classification: Langhe Bianco
While rooted in the tradition of the Langhe, Angelo Gaja recognizes the Nebbiolo grape’s inherent flexibility that allows it to bend to the market’s desire for both oak-driven and tannic styles. Gaja has enriched this foundation with an open-minded sensibility that marries traditional practices and technological innovation, thereby extending Piemonte’s international reach. Gaja’s wines are among the world’s most acclaimed and sought-after bottlings. Gaja’s wines appreciate, trading at premium prices and invariably elevating the price standard in Piemonte, where Gaja’s primary 250-acre estate is located in the Barbaresco and Barolo districts. Striking, profound and age-worthy, Gaja's wines display opulence and elegance. When collectors consider Italian wines for their cellar, Gaja is one of the first names they purchase, and for good reason. Gaja is the gold standard.
