The first clue about Azienda Agricola Gianni Brunelli is the surname of its founder, and the wines of Gianni Brunelli, a born and bred Montalcinese, reflect his heritage. In the late 1980s, Gianni seized an opportunity to repurchase the family's old lands, some of which once grew the grapes for Biondi-Santi's great Brunello Riserva, and he dedicated himself to growing his grapes and making his wines in the ways of his ancestors--without pesticides or chemicals and in a very traditional fashion.Gianni passed away in 2008, and the estate is now run by his wife Laura Brunelli and enologist Paolo Vagaggini, also consulting winemaker at Il Palazzone, Canalicchio di Sopra, and others. This pair ensures that the 17-acre estate continues in the same tradition and with the same vision as local-boy-made-very-good Gianni Brunelli. Crafted from biodynamically grown grapes that derive from two sites, one in Montalcino's north and the other in its south, Gianni Brunelli Brunello and Brunello Riserva offer great balance and terrific typicity.
