Ornellaia's Neighbor Chooses Elegance, What IWM Drinks at a Holiday Party, and More

January 14, 2013
A Note from Sergio

I love a good party, and last Thursday night, I threw one--for the whole IWM staff. From the men who keep the cellar humming to the financial guys who keep the company running, everyone who works at IWM in New York City was invited and most of them came, full of cheer. Our holiday parties are one of the few times that I get to see the IWM family together, making merry, drinking great wines and eating food that I myself cook for them. It makes me feel great to see everyone enjoying themselves.

I've said it so often that it hardly bears repeating, but one of the things I love most about wine is this: more than how delicious it is, more than how its presence on the table makes food sing new melodies, and more than how it makes me feel, wine brings people together. When people drink wine, good wine in good company, something magical happens. Strangers become friends. Friends grow closer. Quiet people tell stories. Loud people listen. And everyone experiences something bigger, better, and brighter than real life.

Today, I'm delighted to offer you the wines we served last Thursday night at our party, a fairly celestial collection, if I dare say so myself. I'm also happy to announce that one wine in specific, the Grattamacco 2008 Bolgheri Superiore, has arrived at IWM, and it's delicious and ready to ship. When I choose wines to sell at IWM, I pick wines that I enjoy, wines that I'd be proud to serve my guests, my employees and my clients. There's magic in those bottles, especially when you share them.

Price: $59.00
Currently Unavailable.

Showing a beautiful pink salmon color, this food-friendly rosé bursts with tiny bubbles that stream endlessly. It has all the exciting aromas that one would expect in a rosé Champagne: rose petals, strawberries, raspberries, Bing cherries, brioche, and subtle spice. On the fruity yet elegant palate, this non-vintage Champagne shows great structure, and its effervescence tingles the senses all the way to its very long finish. Alfred Gratien crafts this wine from 45% Chardonnay from Côtes des Blancs, 15% Pinot Noir from Montagne de Reims and 40% Pinot Meunier from the Marne Valley, and it uses traditional methods to make this wine, including a first fermentation in small oak casks, no malolactic fermentation, and aging in oak for six months before release. more info

Antonio Ferrari Solaria Jonica 1959 500ml
Antonio Ferrari Solaria Jonica 1959 500ml
Price: $159.00

The product of the hottest summer on record in Puglia, the skills of Piemonte-born Antonio Ferrari, and sheer luck, the ’59 Jonica lands somewhere between a Recioto and a Port, but it’s far more complex and surprising. Notes of plums, berries and cherries dance with chocolate, earth, tobacco, black walnuts, caramel, spice and licorice in this dizzyingly layered wine. Though the Jonica has about six decades of age, it remains remarkably vibrant and nervy, hanging its myriad flavors on a sturdy tannic spine and energizing its thick palate with bright acidity. Rich, luscious, concentrated and warm, this wine needs to be tasted to be believed and sipped slowly to be appreciated. A mono-varietal Primitivo grown on old vines, this wine matured in botti for a decade and refined in concrete for an additional 35 years before being bottled. more info
Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco 1988 750ml
Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco 1988 750ml
Price: $179.00
Currently Unavailable.

The 1988 has evolved gracefully and presently exhibits complex aromas of mixed berry fruit and licorice, with mineral undertones. Slight notes of fruit on the palate with secondary characteristics of tobacco leaf, dried pine needles, and orange peel. Though more austere than its younger self, it still possesses remarkable body and extract, yet a tad more astringent than other vintages. more info
Le Macchiole Messorio 2000 750ml
Le Macchiole Messorio 2000 750ml
Price: $279.99
Currently Unavailable.

Upon release, the '00 Messorio was tightly wound, but now with fifteen years of perfect maturity, this Merlot has mellowed, integrated its various components, and transformed into a gorgeous evocation of Bolgheri terroir. Dense red fruit, warm saddle leather, cigar wrapper, grilled herbs, earth, spice and flowers explode on the nose and echo in the palate, where they're complemented by silky tannins and perfect acidity. Succulent, pure fruit dances with smoke, earth, tar and wildflowers in this elegant, aromatic, and nuanced evocation of Messorio; always a collector favorite, this 2000 bottling is just entering its drinking window. more info
Gaja Barbaresco 1970 750ml
Gaja Barbaresco 1970 750ml
Price: $352.00
Currently Unavailable.

Though Gaja is considered a pioneer for his work in the vinification of single-vineyard wines—Sorì San Lorenzo, Sorì Tilden, and Costa Russi—his straight Barbaresco bottling remains a classic representation of traditional Barbaresco, one that is crafted for long-term aging. more info
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Granbussia Riserva 1996 750ml
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Granbussia Riserva 1996 750ml
Price: $449.00
Currently Unavailable.

Aldo Conterno himself promised that the ’96 Barolo Granbussia would last “30 years without any problem.” Twenty years have mellowed the coiled muscularity that this ’96 Granbussia had upon release, and time has enhanced its nuance, delicacy and finesse. Soft, juicy red and black berries mingle with melted tar, rose petals, blood orange, menthol and exotic spices in this kaleidoscopic wine. Balanced and supple, this is a focused Granbussia bottling that’s firing on all cylinders. Granbussia Riserva’s grapes come from the prime Bussia plots of approximately 70% Romirasco, 15% Cicala, and 15% Colonnello. The grapes vinify in large temperature-controlled Slavonian oak casks for about sixty days, and the wine ages in botti for about three years before bottling; the wine is released about eight years after the harvest. Fewer than 800 cases made. more info
