Ornellaia's Neighbor Chooses Elegance, What IWM Drinks at a Holiday Party, and More

January 14, 2013
A Note from Sergio

I love a good party, and last Thursday night, I threw one--for the whole IWM staff. From the men who keep the cellar humming to the financial guys who keep the company running, everyone who works at IWM in New York City was invited and most of them came, full of cheer. Our holiday parties are one of the few times that I get to see the IWM family together, making merry, drinking great wines and eating food that I myself cook for them. It makes me feel great to see everyone enjoying themselves.

I've said it so often that it hardly bears repeating, but one of the things I love most about wine is this: more than how delicious it is, more than how its presence on the table makes food sing new melodies, and more than how it makes me feel, wine brings people together. When people drink wine, good wine in good company, something magical happens. Strangers become friends. Friends grow closer. Quiet people tell stories. Loud people listen. And everyone experiences something bigger, better, and brighter than real life.

Today, I'm delighted to offer you the wines we served last Thursday night at our party, a fairly celestial collection, if I dare say so myself. I'm also happy to announce that one wine in specific, the Grattamacco 2008 Bolgheri Superiore, has arrived at IWM, and it's delicious and ready to ship. When I choose wines to sell at IWM, I pick wines that I enjoy, wines that I'd be proud to serve my guests, my employees and my clients. There's magic in those bottles, especially when you share them.

Antonio Ferrari Solaria Jonica 1959 500ml
Antonio Ferrari Solaria Jonica 1959 500ml
Price: $159.00

The product of the hottest summer on record in Puglia, the skills of Piemonte-born Antonio Ferrari, and sheer luck, the ’59 Jonica lands somewhere between a Recioto and a Port, but it’s far more complex and surprising. Notes of plums, berries and cherries dance with chocolate, earth, tobacco, black walnuts, caramel, spice and licorice in this dizzyingly layered wine. Though the Jonica has about six decades of age, it remains remarkably vibrant and nervy, hanging its myriad flavors on a sturdy tannic spine and energizing its thick palate with bright acidity. Rich, luscious, concentrated and warm, this wine needs to be tasted to be believed and sipped slowly to be appreciated. A mono-varietal Primitivo grown on old vines, this wine matured in botti for a decade and refined in concrete for an additional 35 years before being bottled. more info
