Superstar Italian Trio: Giacomo Conterno Barolo, Alberico Bianco, and Vintage Quintarelli

A Note from Sergio

I started IWM with the belief that wine brings people together, and at IWM, we've always put people first--both the people who make the wine and the people who drink it. I've always said, "We don't sell wine. We sell experiences." This assertion puts people at the center of our business model, but the part you can't always see is the other side, the people who make the wine. I try to make these great people visible in these eLetters. I try to capture their voice, to give shape to their name, to offer a slender piece of humanity to the wine in the bottle. Knowing who made your wine, how they think, and what's important to them helps you connect with the wine a little bit more, and that connection helps you understand, appreciate and enjoy your wine.

Today, I'm very proud to bring you wines from three Italian winemaking masters--Giacomo Conterno, helmed by the estate founder's grandson, Roberto Conterno; Alberico, the estate once owned by Alberico Boncompagni Ludovisi, the Prince of Venosa, and now restored and run by Alessia Antinori; and Giuseppe Quintarelli, the legendary Amarone estate that's led by Bepi's children, although the wine offered today was made by Bepi himself. Though making wines in different regions--Giacomo Conterno is a Piemonte icon, Alberico a Lazio treasure, and Quintarelli a standard bearer in the Veneto--these estates are all deeply human, ineffably Italian, and unquestionably winemaking marvels.

We're honoring these three Italian masters by offering Giacomo Conterno's superb 2005 Barolo Cascina Francia, Alberico's singular 2014 Bianco, and Giuseppe Quintarelli's unparalleled 1990 Amarone Riserva. While wildly different, these are all incredible wines, bound by their beauty, their individual grace, and the gorgeous idiosyncrasy of the people who made them. For all their differences, these wines have one more thing in--each wine makes human experience shine a little bit brighter, glow a little bit more warmly, and burn a bit more deeply into memory.

Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva 1990 750ml
Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva 1990 750ml
Price: $1,499.99

1990 was heralded as one of the great Veneto vintages of the late twentieth century, and upon release this Quintarelli Amarone Riserva was praised for its complexity, its velvety mouth-feel, its seductive power, and its electric energy. Now with almost thirty years of perfect maturity, this wine is stunning, unfurling myriad layers of flavors--juicy red and blue fruits, dried plums, Christmas cake, incense, tarry earth, warm leather, umami, black tea, and so many more. Rich and complex, this wine is nonetheless vibrant, shimmering across the palate to a lingering, resonant crescendo. This collector's wine is primarily from the indigenous Corvina along with Rondinella, Molinara, Negrara and traces of Cabernet, Sangiovese, and Nebbiolo, made in the painstaking appassimento method. This wine is a hedonist’s delight, a wine to be savored and meditated upon, and it’s a fitting tribute to one of the world’s greatest winemakers ever to have lived. more info
