Debuting Canalicchio di Sopra’s Silky, Stylish 2015 Brunello!
January 16, 2020
A Note from Sergio

American wine-lovers are having a passionate affair with Brunello di Montalcino--Americans, after all, drink about a quarter of all the Brunello produced--and this love has changed the course of Brunello, the people who make it, and the town that lends the wine its name, Montalcino. After World War II, Montalcino was one of the poorest towns in Toscana; today, it is one of the wealthiest. In 1961, a lone winemaker, Franco Biondi-Santi, crafted 30,000 bottles of Brunello. By the early 21st century, more than 200 winemakers were producing more than six million bottles. It's a Brunello explosion, and, for all the joy it brings the wine's many fans it's not without consequences.

I pride myself in selecting Brunelli that will please a wide array of wine makers--to a point. I believe in finely made wines of honesty and authenticity. And that's one reason why I have been standing behind Canalicchio di Sopra's long-aging, terroir-driven wines for almost as long as IWM's doors have been open. Today, I'm excited to debut Canalicchio di Sopra's radiant, layered and intense 2015 Brunello. Montalcino's 2015 vintage has rightly been getting a lot of hype in the press--the year managed to effortlessly deliver richness, freshness, intensity, and complexity. If you love Brunello, you owe it to yourself to lay down as much 2015 as you can, and Canalicchio di Sopra's is one very good place to start.

Canalicchio's beautifully made 2015 Brunello embodies the greatness of its vintage, but more than that, this mesmerizing, bewitching wine embodies all the reasons that you fell in love with Brunello in the first place. Canalicchio's '15 Brunello is hard to pin down. It morphs, it shifts, it slinks, its leaps--and despite its ever-changing, protean nature, this wine feels like a seamless whole, a fully realized representation of its lands, its growing year, and its maker. It's an extraordinary wine, and it's my extreme delight to present it to you.

Enjoy!
