Superb 2015 Duo from Cult Winemaker Castello dei Rampolla
January 20, 2020
A Note from Sergio

It's MLK Jr. Day, and most of you are off from work on this national holiday. The time to relax is a beautiful thing, and often we forget to take the time to do nothing. Italians have made an art of it--"La Dolce Far Niente," the sweetness of doing nothing. It's hard to break from our schedules to do the nothings we love to do, but it's important because in these nothing spaces we get connected with the people we love. Doing nothing takes patience, but it's amply rewarded.

Today I'm delighted to present a pair of recently released Super-Tuscan wines from Castello dei Rampolla, an IWM client favorite. The weather gods blessed Tuscan winemakers with gorgeous weather in 2015, and Castello dei Rampolla's team has blessed us with absolutely gorgeous wines. While it's hard to go wrong with Castello dei Rampolla's Sammarco or Vigna d'Alceo in any vintage, the 2015 releases are dazzling. There's more of everything in these two wines--more nuance, more finesse, more power, more refinement, more detail, more passion, and more joy. I think you're going to love them.

Enjoy!

Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco 2015 750ml
Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco 2015 750ml
Price: $99.00

The ’15 Sammarco dances with the grace and power of Baryshnikov, melding impactful intensity with sheer finesse in a breathtaking union. Crisp red and brooding blue fruits layer with pressed fresh herbs, sun-warmed rocks, crushed flower petals, new leather and charcuterie in this wine’s dazzling nose. Pure fruits echo on the palate, where they fuse seamlessly with the wine’s fine-grained tannins, keen acidity, and thrumming mineral bass. You’re going to want to drink this entrancing, textured Sammarco right away (and you can with liberal decanting), but five years in the cellar will show the wine’s true beauty. A blend of biodynamically grown Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), Merlot (30%) and Sangiovese (5%) in 2015, grapes vinify separately for three months in concrete, and the Cabernet and Merlot age in a combination of barrique and vat, while the Sangiovese ages in barrique, for between 12 and 15 months before blending and resting for 18 to 24 months in bottle. more info
Castello dei Rampolla Vigna d'Alceo 2015 750ml
Castello dei Rampolla Vigna d'Alceo 2015 750ml
Price: $199.99

Big, brooding, and powerful, the ’15 d’Alceo roars out of the glass in a profusion of brambly blue and purple fruits, Mediterranean scrub, charcoal, balsamic herbs, licorice, and a touch of grilled meat. This intense wine fills the mouth with chewy tannins and copious dry extract, but a nimble thread of acidity and a solid mineral core keep it supple and lively. Sweet, super-ripe fruits, savory underpinnings, dizzying complexity, and massive structure mark the ’15 d’Alceo as a contender for wine of the vintage. A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon with 15% Petit Verdot, this biodynamic Super Tuscan ferments for three months in concrete with only natural yeasts; the wine ages for 12 to 15 months in tonneaux, followed by 18 to 24 months in bottle before release. more info
