Aldo Conterno’s Superb 2015 Barolo Duo!
January 24, 2020
A Note from Sergio

Aldo Conterno, who passed almost eight years ago, was a winemaking force, not just in Barolo but in the world. Aldo's hankering to explore new winemaking techniques famously caused him to part from his brother, Giovanni, and to leave Giacomo Conterno, their father's estate, and found his own, Poderi Aldo Conterno. In Italy as in America, the Sixties were a time of revolution, and some Barolo producers began experimenting with new, wild winemaking technologies like roto-fermenters, temperature-controlled stainless steel, and aging in barrique. As a young producer, Aldo wanted to see how these new methods would help him make Barolo that fit his vision, so he struck out on his own, buoyed by some vineyard plots, his lifetime of winemaking training, and his own faith in himself.

To say that Aldo succeeded would be an understatement. Poderi Aldo Conterno quickly established itself as one of the greatest Piemonte estates, and as Aldo moved more to the traditional end of the winemaking spectrum, his estate gained more renown. At the end of his life, Aldo put his work in the hands of his sons, whose wines hew closely to their dad's, and the legacy winemaking of Poderi Aldo Conterno continues. Today, I'm proud to announce a new allocation of Aldo Conterno 2015 Barolo Cicala and Barolo Colonnello. 2015 gifted Italian winemakers with an astonishing growing year, and this Barolo pair reflects it--these wines are intense but nuanced, fresh yet muscular, complex yet explosively delicious.

You don't want to miss these two 2015 Aldo Conterno Barolos. They're everything you--or Aldo--could dream of. Enjoy!

Price: $179.00

Aldo Conterno’s Barolo Cicala presents a polished, sophisticated profile of the 2015 vintage. Fistfuls of brooding blue and crisp red fruits layer with tarry earth, forest floor, white truffles, rose petals and incense in this pretty, racy wine. Fine-grained tannins meet vivid acidity in this Barolo’s rolling, round finish that resonates with a harmonious, lingering gong. The second "cru" from Bussia Soprana, Cicala is the most fruit-driven, but also the most tannic and most age-worthy of the estate’s trio of single-vineyard Barolos. Deriving from vines between 40-45 years old grown in soils that are a mix of clay and limestone, this wine spends 28 months in Slavonian oak casks before bottling. Just 500 cases made. more info
