Mastroberardino’s Flagship “Big Red,” the Superb 2012 Taurasi Radici Riserva
January 29, 2020
A Note from Sergio

It sounds like a tall tale, but it's not. Two Mastroberardino brothers, Antonio and Walter, are responsible for rescuing the indigenous Aglianico from the threat of extinction. Moreover, their ability to create gorgeous mono-varietal wines from Aglianico cemented the Mastroberardino legacy and brought the wines of Campania into the collective wine consciousness. Though Walter was instrumental, Antonio was a visionary winemaker, and because of him, Mastroberardino is a visionary estate. When Mastroberardino released its watershed 1968 Taurasi, the wine world recognized Campania, Aglianico, and Mastroberardino as major players, even though it'd take another couple of decades for Aglianico to catch fire beyond wine's cognoscenti.

Today, I'm very pleased to announce a new allocation of Mastroberardino 2012 Taurasi Radici, a classic, brooding, unabashedly virile wine, and it's going to drink beautifully for decades. "Radici" means "roots," and in the 1980s, Mastroberardino added the word to its Taurasi's name, a nod to indicate the importance that this wine holds for Mastroberardino. Today's 2012 Taurasi Radici Riserva is sleek but feral; it's a massive--and massively delicious--wine that will age gorgeously. Priced at less than $60 a bottle, this Taurasi Radici Riserva bottling is a terrific choice to buy by the case because you'll want to experience it as it evolves year by delectable year.
