Landmark Vintage, Iconic Producer, Biondi-Santi’s 2016 Rosso di Montalcino
January 30, 2020
A Note from Sergio

Looking like pairs of stately dress soldiers, two neat rows of cypress trees border the driveway to Biondi-Santi's Il Greppo estate, the place where Brunello di Montalcino was born. These trees seem to usher your car both toward the estate and back in time, embracing the tensions present in creating a traditional wine for the contemporary world. Hushed yet ever-ready, Il Greppo's cellar is the best evocation of all that makes Biondi-Santi special. Light slants through its windows, illuminating the space like a chapel. Its red cement floor gleams, and its cement maceration tanks shine. The ancient botti are huge and immaculate, and the bottling station glimmers with efficiency and technology.

In its grounds and in its wines, Biondi-Santi epitomizes the ideal of eternal elegance, and despite its recent changes, Biondi-Santi continues to stand as an icon of tradition. Today, I'm very proud to debut Biondi-Santi Il Greppo 2016 Rosso di Montalcino. 2016 saw the second benchmark ripe vintage in a row in Montalcino, and this bottling is sheer class--it's rich but structured, aromatic but savory, vivid yet nuanced, and unabashedly delicious. This is Rosso di Montalcino is made to show its fine bones, its sophistication, and its refinement--it's excellent enough to be considered a Biondi-Santi "Baby Brunello," and that's saying something.

Bursting with crisp red and succulent blue fruits, Biondi-Santi’s ’16 Rosso tempts from the first whiff; secondary notes of violet petals, warm baking spices, savory herbs, fresh loam and a touch of chocolate counterbalance the wine’s enticing fruits. Fresh yet lush, firm yet open-knit, loaded with sweet fruits held on earthy underpinnings, this ’16 Rosso embraces its tensions. Fine-grained, sturdy tannins, vivid acidity, and luscious dry extract weld seamlessly to create a “baby Brunello” that’s enjoyable now or over the next decade. Deriving from Il Greppo’s younger vines, grapes undergo a temperature-controlled fermentation, and the wine ages for a year in oak casks, followed by four months in bottle before release. more info
