Vintage Review: 7 Guado al Tasso, 9 Barolo Monfortino, and One Superb Soldera Brunello Riserva!
January 4, 2018
A Note from Sergio

"You cannot step twice into the same river," Heraclitus said. I think about this quote often, especially when I revisit wines I've had before. Stepping into that river, neither you nor the water is the same, and drinking the same wine over time is similar. You've changed, it has changed, yet the echo of your previous experience resonates. When you drink a wine, you get to know it; when you drink the same wine at different points in time, you feel how it has evolved, and as you sip, you reflect on your own life. Like you and me, wine is a living thing, and it's the only thing we can consume that changes as we do.

Today, I'm excited to give you a chance to revisit (or to experience for the first time) some back vintages of Guado al Tasso's flagship wine, Giacomo Conterno's legendary Barolo Monfortino Riserva, and Gianfranco Soldera's outstanding Brunello Riserva. I've pulled together seven vintages of Guado al Tasso, managing to secure wines as old as 1995, as well as a new allocation of the radiant 2013--it's a beautiful retrospective of a wine that's very hard to get in fully mature bottles. Aficionados of mature Barolo will be very excited about the nine Barolo Monfortino Riserva wines in today's offer; spanning 1941 to 2004, the wines on this list will blow you away. And finally, there's one 2005 Brunello Riserva from Gianfraco Soldera. It's a wine that shows how Soldera's genius shines, even in "off" vintages.

Guado al Tasso Guado Al Tasso Bolgheri Superiore 2007 750ml
Guado al Tasso Guado Al Tasso Bolgheri Superiore 2007 750ml
Price: $129.00

Upon release, the ripe vintage 2007 Guado al Tasso was praised for its bold, intense and delicious profile. Now with more than a decade of age, this wine is firing on all cylinders, layering its rich frutti di bosco with grilled herbs, licorice, melted chocolate, exotic spices, and cigar wrapper; tertiary notes of black tea, potpourri, and truffles murmur in the background. Tannins mellowed, the wine glides with a velvety texture into its finish that’s accented by crystalline minerals and savory herbs. A blend that shifts with every vintage, the 2007 Guado is about 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. For the 2007 Guado al Tasso, Antinori fermented each varietal separately for 15 to 20 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel and aged each varietal separately for 18 months in new barrique before blending and letting the wine rest in bottle for ten months before release. more info
