Debuting La Spinetta’s Radiant, Superb 2016 Barbaresco Trio!
January 8, 2020
A Note from Sergio

La Spinetta is very different from other Piemonte wineries. Its cantina holds huge tanks of gleaming stainless steel, perfectly coiled hoses, a spotless laboratory, a storybook-like cellar with perfectly stained big-bellied barriques. The interior looks like the best of the New World wineries, a far cry from the cobweb-and-dust-laced cellars that are the rule for traditional Barolo and Barbaresco makers. And yet, while the cellar might look contemporary, La Spinetta's wines speak of their soil. La Spinetta's wines--revolutionary, inspired, and cult-inspiring--are pure, explosive expressions of their terroir.

Just like the Barbaresco wines made by Angelo Gaja and Bruno Giacosa, La Spinetta's belong to an elite, collectable class. But while Giacosa is a traditionalist and Gaja a maverick, La Spinetta used modern methodology like intensive pruning, roto-fermenters, and refinement in new barriques to craft a Barbaresco that is often approachable upon release. More than that, La Spinetta made wines that performed like drinkable, intense, perfectly ripe Barbaresco that nonetheless could evolve for decades. Over time, La Spinetta has grown slightly more traditional, and its wines reflect this shift. They've grown even purer, even more age-worthy, even more complex, and somehow even more transparent.

Today, I'm very proud to debut the 2016 Barbaresco trio from La Spinetta. Wine insiders have been doing cartwheels over 2016's Barbaresco releases, and these four wines attest to the greatness of the vintage. Each one is singular, glowing with the year's perfect growing season--a nearly perfect encapsulation of time, terroir and winemaking. If you love Barbaresco, you want to jump on these three bottles--this debut allocation is not going to last long!

Enjoy!

La Spinetta Barbaresco Starderi 2016 750ml
La Spinetta Barbaresco Starderi 2016 750ml
Price: $119.00

The ’16 Barbaresco Starderi reflects its remarkable vintage in its power, poise, and sheer breathtaking beauty. Fistfuls of red and blue fruits explode from the glass, framed by licorice, pressed wild herbs, crushed violet petals, vanilla, and touches of tar and ash. This is a bold Barbaresco, but it sacrifices no elegance to its sexy muscularity; chewy tannins meld with vivid acidity in a bewitching palate that deftly unites grace with intensity. Cellar for a few years and drink for decades. Deriving from a 16-acre south-facing vineyard that sports vines aging about 30 years, the grapes for this wine ferment in temperature-controlled oak vats; the wine ages for about three years in oak, three months in stainless steel, and a year in bottle before release. more info
La Spinetta Barbaresco Gallina 2016 750ml
La Spinetta Barbaresco Gallina 2016 750ml
Price: $119.00

Nicely oaky and gorgeously delineated, the ’16 Barbaresco Gallina layers its lush red and blue fruits on a graceful framework of rose petals, baking spices, cigar wrapper, warm river rocks, and pressed mint. Barbaresco Gallina is the most elegant of La Spinetta’s rock-star 2016 releases, wrapping its sweet fruits around a sturdy tannic core, balancing its sweet inner perfume with a savory bass line, and complementing its vivid acidity with lush dry extract. Cellar for a few years and then enjoy for decades. Deriving from vines aged 50 to 55 years grown in an 11-acre southern-facing plot of calcareous clay, the grapes ferment for about a week with temperature control, and the wine ages first in barrique for about 21 months, then in stainless steel for three months, and finally a year in bottle before release. more info

La Spinetta Barbaresco Valeirano 2016 750ml
Price: $119.00

Wild, brambly black cherries, crisp currants, and a kiss of blood orange dance with fresh loam, crushed herbs, pencil lead, baking spices and potpourri in the massive, intense ’16 Barbaresco Valeirano. Showing Barbaresco’s mesmerizing sauvage side, this wine fills the mouth with chewy, dense tannins, fine ripe fruits, penetrating acidity, and a sneaky minerality that lingers on the finish. Cellar for a few years and then enjoy for decades. This wine derives from 45 to 50-year-old Nebbiolo vines grown in the estate’s 7.41-acre Valeirano vineyard, a south-facing plot with calcareous rocky soil. After handpicking, the grapes ferment for about a week in temperature-controlled vats, and then age first in new oak barrique for 20 to 22 months, then stainless steel for three months, followed by a year in bottle before release. more info
