A Note from Sergio

Terroir is a watchword in wine, and it literally means "earth" or "soil," but in practice, "terroir" is more than the dirt where the vines grow. Terroir encompasses the plants that surround the vineyard, the bugs that visit it, the winds that blow on the vines' leaves, the nearby flowers whose pollen dusts the grapes as they ripen, the trees whose needles or leaves fall on the ground, the animals that play nearby, the rocks that stud the soil, and the rains that fall through the air, carrying microscopic particles as they drop. Terroir, in other words, is complex, and every microregion's terroir is as individual as you or I.

When people think of Chianti, they don't usually think of terroir--they think of easy-to-drink, zesty, bright, vivid, and delicious reds. But here's the thing: what often lends Chianti those factors is terroir. Sure, the Sangiovese grape is naturally toothsome and lively, and, sure, various winemaking protocols can influence a wine's palate and texture. But what makes a Chianti a real Chianti, and what sets a good bottle apart from the anonymous red wines that flood the market, is its sense of terroir--its commitment to place, to life, and to history.

Today, I'm very proud to present Tenuta Trecciano's 2015 Terra Rosso Chianti Colli Senesi Riserva. A relatively new estate on ancient vine-growing land in the heart of Montagnola Senese, the most special thing about Tenuta Trecciano is its red and chalky soils. High in iron ore, Trecciano's vineyards are ideal for the tough-skinned Sangiovese, but they're also excellent for the estate's international grapes. Trecciano grows grapes that burst with flavors, and its team turns these grapes into mineral-laden, terroir-driven wines. Try the estate's delicious Chianti Riserva--it's less than $20. I think you'll really enjoy it.

Charming and fruity, this ’15 Chianti Riserva puts its lush cherries and brambly berries in the spotlight, framing them with baking spices, warm earth, violet petals, and new leather. Round yet sprightly, this wine fills the mouth with a sweet inner perfume as a thrumming iron-ore bass line moves it to a brisk, food-friendly finish. Named after the red earth of its vineyards, this Chianti Riserva is an ideal Tuesday-night wine. After being hand-picked, Sangiovese grapes ferment with selected yeasts for about two weeks in temperature-controlled stainless steel; the wine ages for 18 months in botti, followed by at least four months of bottle rest before release. more info
