Citrus and orchard fruits dance with crushed rocks, toasted nuts, white flowers, and a touch of spicy wood in this supple, opulent ’13 Meursault Gruyaches, one of the region’s lesser known vineyards. Vibrant yet concentrated, the ’13 Meursault Gruyaches builds to a mineral-inflected crescendo. Deriving from 80-year-old vines at the base of Charmes, this wine ages for a year or more in barrel (one-sixth new) and three to six months in tank to create a balanced, round, and age-worthy Meursault.

It’s fair to say that no one has done as much to reclaim Meursault as Jean-Philippe Fichet, a man of uncompromising standards. The son of a wine grower who sold most of his juice, Fichet is a meticulous genius, taking the kind of maniacal care in the vineyards and in the cellar that precludes shortcuts but inevitably offers winemaking magic. Jean-Phillipe founded his own estate in 2000, devoted to coaxing the best from Meursault. His wines stride the delicate line between opulence and precision, and if these wines are now little known beyond a circle of cognoscenti, they won’t be for long. The unclassified plots, or lieux-dits, from Jean-Philippe Fichet achieve world-class greatness at a quarter of the price.
