Once-In-A-Lifetime Wine, 1971 Quintarelli Amarone Riserva
July 17, 2019
A Note from Sergio

Reading these eLetters, you might have noticed us talking about the "IWM Difference." More than merely distinguishing IWM from other merchants, the "IWM Difference" encapsulates my approach to selling wines: every IWM wine comes with pristine, straight-line provenance, and every wine enjoys perfect temperature-controlled care throughout its lifespan. While we treat all our wines with care, this tender loving care becomes even more important when you're buying a great wine of longevity. An age-worthy wine should not be ready as soon as it goes to market. It requires patience, time, and a long rest in a perfect cellar, and IWM ensures that mature wines get all that--and more.

The "IWM Difference" also means that we won't sell a wine without vetting it and tasting it. For example, I'll never offer a 1971 Quintarelli Amarone Riserva (or a 1937 Monfortino or a 1947 Biondi-Santi Brunello Riserva) without sampling the wine every few years. IWM is the only company I know that routinely goes deep into cellars to unearth rare, perfect bottles, to require impeccable provenance, and to spot-check bottles for quality. It's not easy to get back-vintage rare bottles for you, but I've worked hard over the years to forge friendships with European sources so that I can deliver the exceptional and perfect mature wines that my clients desire.

Today, I'm very proud to announce that I've secured a very few bottles of Quintarelli's celestial 1971 Amarone Riserva. I imagine the late, great Bepi Quintarelli as he was when he made this wine: standing tall, with dark hair and bright eyes. Just 44, Bepi was in the prime of his life, and this wine bursts with energy, even as it flows like flocked velvet. Quintarelli's 1971 Amarone Riserva is a once-in-a-lifetime wine, but oh, what a lifetime it is!

Enjoy the IWM difference--you deserve it!

Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva 1971 750ml
Price: $1,599.00

Raisened red and blue fruits layer with melted chocolate, Christmas cake, tarry earth, medicinal herbs, black tea, and warm saddle leather in this wonderfully mature Amarone Riserva. Dense, seamless and lively, this ’71 Amarone Riserva is a treat for lovers of mature wines and fans of Quintarelli; tertiary notes and silky, integrated tannins show the wine’s age, yet it retains that telltale Quintarelli power and complexity. While Quintarelli produces its Amarone only in exceptional vintages, the estate restricts its Amarone Riserva to very great vintages; this decades-old wine now sits in the center of its drinking window. This collector Amarone Riserva is a proprietary blend of indigenous Corvina with Rondinella and traces of Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo, Croatina, and Sangiovese. more info
