A Note from Sergio

I'm going to keep this introduction short because you've got a lot to love in today's eLetter--more than 200 French wines, on sale, for just 24 hours. Though the passion for and knowledge of Italian wines drives IWM, I've always had love in my heart for wines from outside of Italy, and the first non-Italian wine, Champagne, has been stocked in our cellar since the first day I opened IWM's doors almost two decades ago. You'll find Champagne on today's list of sale wines, but you'll also find Burgundy, Bordeaux, Rosé, Rhône wines, and even some select bottles from Alsace and Corsica. It's an incredible roster of French wines with incredible pricing. Fill your cellars and drink beautifully for years and years to come!

Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Ronceret 2011 750ml
Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Ronceret 2011 750ml
Price: $92.99

Profoundly dense and rich, this ’11 Volnay is approachable and filled with sweet, ripe fruit, blending energy with a brooding profile, firm structure with elegance, and fine tannins with sauvage notes. This massive wine will certainly get better with time, but the its black and blue fruits, nuances of anise, violets, and wildflowers make this incredibly tempting to open now. A three-acre parcel of 25-year-old vines in very poor, very stony soil, Ronceret sits just under Champans; it’s the bottling its maker calls “My baby.” With its brambly fruits, exotic spices, rich earth, firm minerality and complex texture, his ’11 Ronceret is a palate-staining Burgundy that’s pure physical pleasure to drink, from its aromatic nose to its pyrotechnic finish. Just 100 cases made. more info

Lush red and blue fruits are layered with potpourri, gunpowder tea, wet river rocks, sun-warmed earth, and autumn leaves in this aromatically captivating ’12 Volnay. Vibrant yet opulent, this wine swaddles the palate with plenty of chewy tannins, coats the cheeks with copious dry extract, and finishes with a seamless harmony. Deriving from an old-vine four-acre plot lower on the Volnay slope, Joseph Voillot's Les Champans privileges fruit, power, and a decided sensuality. Silky in texture, bursting with red and black fruit, oozing class and sophistication, this '12 Les Champans presents a very visceral Volnay profile. more info

Pousse d'Or Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Les Charmes 2013 750ml
Price: $225.00

Intense, vivacious and welcoming, the nose of this ’13 Chambolle-Musigny Charmes bursts from the glass with a profusion of red and blue fruit, potpourri, musky earth, minerals and wildflowers. This wine is remarkably sensual, given the vintage and its youth, and its graceful tannins and exquisite balance pull you back to the glass. Just under a half acre, Pousse d’Or’s Charmes plot is small but mighty. This southeast-facing parcel sports limestone rock with thin topsoil, forcing the roots of the thirty-year-old vines to dig deep for nourishment. After destemming, the biodynamically grown grapes ferment with natural yeast in temperature-controlled tanks; the wine ages in barrel (one-third new) for fifteen months before bottling without fining or filtration. more info
Pierre Damoy Chapelle Chambertin AC Grand Cru 2013 750ml
Pierre Damoy Chapelle Chambertin AC Grand Cru 2013 750ml
Price: $264.00

While Pierre Damoy called the 2013 vintage “galère complète," or total hell, this vivacious, complex Chapelle-Chambertin doesn’t show it. Picture-perfect and pretty, Damoy’s ’13 Chapelle-Chambertin frames its red and blue fruits with scents of crushed flowers, warm earth, baking spices, and sous de bois--it’s a captivating nose that echoes on the palate. The succulent and aromatic ‘13 Chapelle-Chambertin complicates its sweet fruits with savory herbs and minerals as it builds to a lingering, punchy finish that will surprise and delight. Louis Jadot Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 750ml
Louis Jadot Chapelle Chambertin Grand Cru 2012 750ml
Price: $299.00

Majestic, opulent yet still delicate and sophisticated, the ’12 Chapelle-Chambertin from Louis Jadot is a towering achievement. Ripe, rich cherries and berries waft with pencil lead, fruit cordial, saline minerals, underbrush, and spice in this broad-shouldered, energetic bottling. At once sappy and vibrant, this bottling shows tremendous structure, caressing tannins, and an extraordinarily long finish. Deriving from the estate’s east-facing Chapelle-Chambertin plot of very old vines situated between Latricières Chambertin Grand Cru and Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, the grapes for this wine ferment in vat for about a month and the wine ages for 18 to 20 months in oak barrels before bottling. Lignier Michelot Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 2012 750ml
Price: $369.00

Sumptuous fruit wraps around an earthy, mineral core in this exquisite Clos de la Roche bottling; although its enticing aromatics will entreat you to drink it early, you’ll want to wait because this wine’s structure needs a few years in the cellar to allow true approachability. Deriving from the estate’s .66-acre parcel of vines planted between 1968 and 1993, the Clos de la Roche grapes ferment in temperature-controlled tanks, and the wine ages in barrel, half to fully new, for about sixteen months before bottling, unfiltered. Domaine Lamarche Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 2012 750ml
Domaine Lamarche Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru 2012 750ml
Price: $379.00

The 2012 Echézeaux takes a look back to the 2009s, which is akin to the recent 2012 vintage. There were many differences between these years—for example, 2009 was a bumper crop and 2012 saw a production dip of 50 percent—but the result of both vintages is voluptuous, rich, dense and seductive wines that stain the palate. Because of these qualities, the wine might not cellar as long, but it is all relative because it will still be a joy for thirty years. This wine derives from the estate’s east-facing three-quarter-acre clay and limestone parcel of thirty-year-old vines. After handpicking and de-stemming 80-100% of the grapes, Lamarche ferments them in temperature-controlled open oak vats for about two weeks; the wine matures in oak casks (60-100% new, depending on vintage) for 16-20 months, and it’s bottled without fining or filtration. About 100 cases made. more info

Elegant and racy, the ’12 Clos St Denis leaps out of the glass with a perfumed profusion of berries and cherries, black tea, sun-warmed wildflowers, crushed river rocks, and generous spices. This nicely tannic wine feels dense yet animated as it powers to a complex, sustained finish that revels in this wine’s balance and harmony. Lignier-Michelot replanted its Clos St Denis site in 2003; mostly whole clusters of grapes ferment in temperature-controlled tanks, and the wine ages in barrel, half to fully new, for about sixteen months before bottling, unfiltered. About 24 cases made yearly. more info
