July 30, 2019
A Note from Sergio

I'm going to keep this introduction short because you've got a lot to love in today's eLetter--more than 200 French wines, on sale, for just 24 hours. Though the passion for and knowledge of Italian wines drives IWM, I've always had love in my heart for wines from outside of Italy, and the first non-Italian wine, Champagne, has been stocked in our cellar since the first day I opened IWM's doors almost two decades ago. You'll find Champagne on today's list of sale wines, but you'll also find Burgundy, Bordeaux, Rosé, Rhône wines, and even some select bottles from Alsace and Corsica. It's an incredible roster of French wines with incredible pricing. Fill your cellars and drink beautifully for years and years to come!

Enjoy!

Domaine Vico Rouge 2009
Domaine Vico Rouge 2009 750ml
Price: $29.99
Currently Unavailable.

This blend of biodynamically grown indigenous grapes Niellucciu and Sciaccarellu is tempered with Syrah, making a wine as strangely beautiful as the island it calls home, Corsica, a former Roman colony and a land imbued with Italian winemaking tradition. Manly grilled herbs and robust spices greet the nose and form the foundation of the palate of this brooding wine whose notes of black cherry only add to its seductiveness. There's a windswept saline element to this '09 that offers a velvety mouth-feel complemented by a happy acidity. Drinking for the next five years, preferably with meat and other hearty, macho foods. more info

Brambly berries, juicy cherries, and light citrus rest on a foundation of earth, musk, and spice in this nicely brooding wine. Deriving from Louis Jadot’s holdings in Marsannay, the northernmost commune of the Côte d’Or, this village-level wine ferments in wooden vats; it then ages for 15 months in barriques before bottling. A deeply food-friendly Pinot Noir that’s a good accompaniment to gamy or marinated meats, this Marsannay offers telltale sauvage, firm tannins and a supple mouth-feel; enjoyable both young and with some age, this village wine is a fantastic value. more info

This is an unabashedly food-friendly red that pulls your ears to the glass with its beguiling aromatics, silky mouth-feel and robust personality. Vibrant acidity and a spicy palate make this bottling very food-friendly. Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Ronceret 2011 750ml
Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Ronceret 2011 750ml
Price: $92.99

Profoundly dense and rich, this ’11 Volnay is approachable and filled with sweet, ripe fruit, blending energy with a brooding profile, firm structure with elegance, and fine tannins with sauvage notes. This massive wine will certainly get better with time, but the its black and blue fruits, nuances of anise, violets, and wildflowers make this incredibly tempting to open now. A three-acre parcel of 25-year-old vines in very poor, very stony soil, Ronceret sits just under Champans; it’s the bottling its maker calls “My baby.” With its brambly fruits, exotic spices, rich earth, firm minerality and complex texture, his ’11 Ronceret is a palate-staining Burgundy that’s pure physical pleasure to drink, from its aromatic nose to its pyrotechnic finish. Just 100 cases made. more info

If you're a Burghound who enjoys a sauvage Burgundy, this vintage of Gay's Corton-Renardes is a classic wine that was tailor made for your palate. Complex, aromatic and beautifully tannic, this '12 Corton-Renardes is enjoyable now, or it could cellar for a decade. The name “Renardes” translates to fox, a nod to the wine’s feral underpinnings and velvety texture. Deriving from a tiny limestone and clay vineyard just above Corton-Bressandes, this wine oozes with rich palate-drenching dry extract; a little time in the cellar will tame its wildness into a beautiful beast. more info

Domaine de la Pousse d'Or Volnay Clos des 60 Ouvrees 2013 750ml
Price: $109.99

Pure, juicy Pinot Noir fruit mingles with a touch of spice and earth, and crushed violets in the nose of this ’13 Volnay. Lacy yet structured, this wine complements its sappy fruit with minerality, which along with the grippy tannins coats the palate and lingers on the finish. About 5.25 acres, this east-facing monopole has old vines that date as far back as 1958 (the most recent portion was replanted in 1991), which grow in mixed limestone marl and clay-limestone. After destemming, the biodynamically grown grapes ferment with natural yeast in temperature-controlled tanks; the wine ages in barrel (one-third new) for fifteen months before bottling without fining or filtration. more info

Jean-Pierre Mugneret Vosne Romanee 1er Cru 1999 750ml
Price: $109.99

Spicy red and blue fruits mingle with dried flower petals, warm loam, melted chocolate, orange zest, licorice, and a layer of shaved pencil lead in this outstanding, perfectly aged ’99 Vosne-Romanée from Mugneret. This wine reflects its benchmark vintage in its seamlessness, its exquisite balance, and the terrific tension between sweet fruits and savory, mineral-laden underpinnings. Velvety soft tannins linger on the stylish, long finish, and while almost twenty years old, this wine shows remarkable freshness and structure. Grapes enjoy a lengthy maceration, and the wine aged in barrique, about 70% new. One of the great Burgundy vintages in living memory, 1999 offered a harvest of balanced, thoroughly ripe, and highly concentrated grapes, and this ’99 Vosne-Romanée typifies the vintage in its intensity, luscious texture, and sheer beauty. more info
Serafin Pere & Fils Gevrey Chambertin 1er Les Corbeaux 2011 750ml
Serafin Pere & Fils Gevrey Chambertin 1er Les Corbeaux 2011 750ml
Price: $119.99
Currently Unavailable.

Balancing its brooding, sauvage elements with an elegant profile, this ’11 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Corbeaux is a study in contrasts. Sweet red and blue fruits dance with underbrush, smoky minerals, warm saddle leather and freshly tilled earth. While this wine seems round and enveloping, sturdy tannins argue that it’ll be even more enjoyable about a decade after release, making it ideal for wine-lovers who can wait to enjoy it. Deriving from the estate’s clay and limestone parcel of vines that are about fifty years of age, the grapes enjoyed a cold soak before fermentation with only natural yeasts, and the wine aged in entirely new oak for about twenty months before bottling. more info
