When you arrive at Il Palazzone, which sits perched at the top of a
Montalcino hill and at the end of a very winding, pitted dirt road, you
see it's a very beautiful piece of land. The hills gently undulate
down, drawing the eye with happy squares of vineyards arranged like the
blocks of a chaotic quilt. Rows of vines, brown in the fall, black in
the winter, a tender shade of green in the spring that turns deeply
verdant in the summer, run like text across each parcel. On one side of
the property is the new cellar, a proud brick building that shows its
heritage and its technology; on the other sits a beautiful old Tuscan
Dick Parsons bought this property about fourteen years ago.
Parsons, businessman and philanthropist, is very tall, and when he
shakes your hand, his big fist encompasses it in a very friendly grip.
Even if he weren't the tallest guy in the room, you'd notice him because
of his charisma; he smiles a lot, and he has much to smile about. Not a
winemaker from birth--Parsons was born in raised in Bedford Stuyvesant
in Brooklyn--Dick has made a serious venture of Il Palazzone. It's one
of IWM's favorite estates, and that's because it makes some of our very
Today, I'm proud to spotlight a pair of Il Palazzone vintages that
go together like salt and pepper, like peaches and cream, like wine and
bread; they're entirely complementary. The delicate, ethereal '08 is
beautiful to drink right now, while you lay down bottles of the
savorous, strapping '09. They very much embody Dick's motto for the
estate: "We drink what we can and sell the rest."
