Quintarelli Amarone Retrospective, 1971-2007
June 19, 2017
A Note from Sergio

Just over four years ago, I introduced my clients to the phrase that guides me in securing wines, the "IWM Difference." I did it with our biggest Quintarelli offer to date, more than 90 amazing wines. The "IWM Difference" encapsulates my approach to selling wines. Every wine comes with pristine, straight-line provenance, and every wine enjoys perfect temperature-controlled care throughout its lifespan. An everyday drinking wine should be made for instant gratification, so this quality control isn't as important, yet we take care of your Tuesday night Barbera the same way we take care of your vintage Rinaldi Barolo. But while we treat all our wines with care, this care becomes very important when you're buying a great wine of longevity. An age-worthy wine should not be ready as soon as it goes to market. It requires patience, time, and a long rest in a perfect cellar.

This brings me to how IWM does things differently. IWM doesn't sell a wine without vetting it and tasting it. For example, I'll never offer a 1937 Monfortino or a 1971 Quintarelli without sampling the wine every few years. IWM is the only company I know that routinely goes deep into cellars to unearth rare, perfect bottles, to require impeccable provenance, and to spot-check bottles for quality. It's not easy to get back-vintage rare bottles for you, but I've worked hard over the years to forge friendships with European sources so that I can deliver the rare, exceptional and perfect wines that my clients desire.

Today, I'm delighted to offer a Quintarelli Amarone retrospective--nineteen vintages of Amarone and Amarone Riserva spanning from 1971 to 2007. While smaller than the offer that started me talking about the "IWM Difference," this list illustrates exactly how differently we are from other wine retailers. These Quintarelli wines come from a private cellar with perfect provenance, a traceable line straight from producer to us, and from us to you. They haven't been jostled at auction. They haven't spent a moment in the heat or in the sun. They have been cared for and loved every moment of their maturity, and now they're ready for you and the people you love.

Enjoy!

Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella 1998 750ml
Price: $549.00

Upon release, Quintarelli’s ’98 Amarone was praised for its purity, its intensity, and its complexity; now with almost two decades of maturity this wine is even more magical. Succulent red and blue fruits mingle with a mélange of peppery spices, autumn leaves, stewed plums, black tea and warm saddle leather in this utterly spellbinding Amarone.  Full-bodied yet incredibly detailed, this ’98 Amarone unfolds on the palate with terrific transparency and exquisite balance, revealing layer upon layer of notes and textures as it glides to a resonant, lingering finish. This collector's wine is primarily from the indigenous Corvina along with Rondinella, Molinara, Negara and traces of Cabernet, Sangiovese, and Nebbiolo, made in the painstaking appassimento method. Replete with myriad layers and endless flavors, Quintarelli’s Amarone demands to be contemplated rather than merely consumed. Always rich, opulent, sensuous and extraordinary, Quintarelli’s magical Amarones hold you in their thrall. more info

Price: $799.00

Juicy red and blue fruits dance with incense, Christmas cake, kirsch, warm saddle leather, espresso, earth, and cigar wrapper in this bewitching, ageless ’03 Amarone Riserva. Velvety and caressing, this wine wraps the palate with unrestrained voluptuousness, unfolding its tantalizing layers to slowly reveal a crescendo of flavors. Fine-grained tannins cling to the cheeks, while savory, earthy notes balance the wine’s explosive fruit, creating a harmonious concert for its lucky drinker. Full-bodied and complex, this exquisite Amarone Riserva is drinking wonderfully now, but it’ll be enjoyable for decades to come. Quintarelli’s collector's wine is the benchmark for all Amarone, composed primarily of the indigenous Corvina blended with Rondinella and traces of Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo, Croatina, and Sangiovese, which are partially dried in the appassimento method prior to vinification through very traditional means. more info

Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone Valpolicella Riserva 2003 1.5L

Describing Quintarelli Amarone Riserva is always pointless--its myriad notes render the wine beyond words--but rarely is this more true in the darkly gorgeous ’03 Amarone Valpolicella Riserva. Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva 1995 1.5L
Giuseppe Quintarelli Amarone della Valpolicella Riserva 1995 1.5L
Price: $3,499.00

Upon release, Quintarelli’s ’95 Amarone Riserva was hailed as a triumph. Now with more than twenty years of maturity, this wine is proving to be a majestic beauty that evokes its maker’s hands in its structure, texture and sheer beauty. This wine bursts from the glass with a profusion of red and black fruits, melted chocolate, tarry earth, Christmas cake, underbrush, truffles and black tea. Filling the mouth with a silken weight, this Amarone remains supple and nimble owing to its vibrant core of acidity and its lively minerality. This is a wine that invites meditation: layer upon layer of flavors unfurl on the palate in a kaleidoscopic drinking experience that culminates in a lingering, resonant finish. While Quintarelli produces its Amarone only in exceptional vintages, the estate restricts its Amarone Riserva to very great vintages; this decades-old wine now sits in the center of its drinking window. This collector Amarone Riserva is a proprietary blend of indigenous Corvina with Rondinella and traces of Cabernet Sauvignon, Nebbiolo, Croatina, and Sangiovese. more info
