Terrific Trios, 70+ Gorgeous Wine Three-Packs at Special Pricing!
June 19, 2018
A Note from Sergio

Three gets a rough rap. There's "three's a crowd" and "third time's the charm," neither of which gives ringing endorsements to three. There's the "rule of three" that says that celebrities always die in threes. There are the sayings "three strikes and you're out," "three sheets to the wind," and "three on a match"--none of these are good things. A three-ring circus may be fun to watch, but as a metaphor it's a chaotic mess.

Today, however, I'm very happy to provide a reason to give three cheers to the number three: a special flash sale on fine wine trios. This list of almost 80 bottles has something for everyone, whether you're new to wine and looking to build a cellar, you're someone with hundreds of bottles laid down, or you're a casual wine-lover who's looking for some really good pours for your next party. If you get lost in this list, ask one of IWM's portfolio managers to guide you--they're all good people, and they'll make picking your wines as easy as one-two-three.

Enjoy!

Cantina Terlano Terlaner Classico Alto Adige 1986 750ml
Cantina Terlano Terlaner Classico Alto Adige 1986 750ml
Price: $249.99

This Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc blend offers indescribable beauty, and this ’86 bottle, wonderful vintage for this wine, is perfect for drinking right now. Honeyed, ripe fruits, toasted nuts, minerals, dried and fresh flowers, and many more notes will be evident in this mature Alto Adige wine that will bring to mind a textured Alsatian white and a mature white Burgundy. A cooperative of more than 100 wine growers located in Alto Adige’s Dolomite Mountains, Cantina Terlato has more than 2,000 years of winemaking history on its side. It also has some extraordinary terroir. Sheltered in a hollow of the Alps, Terlano’s 300 acres boast south-facing vineyards that rise from 820-3,000 feet above sea level, but best of all, the soil is this volcanic rock that retains heat, allowing the vines to stay warm when it gets cold and sloughing off water when it rains. This cooperative makes some of the best whites in all of Italy. more info

Gaja Chardonnay Gaia & Rey 1988 750ml
Gaja Chardonnay Gaia & Rey 1988 750ml
Price: $499.00

Bursting with caramel, orchard fruits, potpourri, baking spices and crushed river rocks, this mature Gaia & Rey marries its tertiary notes with its freshness. This golden wine unfurls on the palate with a silky feel to offer a bevy of complex notes; its saline minerality offsets its inner perfume, and its slightly oxidized mouth-feel complements its vibrant acidity. This is a fine aged Chardonnay that does its maker, Angelo Gaja, proud. Deriving from Gaja’s almost nine-acre Treiso vineyard planted in 1979, this wine is named for Angelo Gaja’s oldest daughter, Gaia Gaja, and his grandmother, Clotilde Rey. Gaia & Rey ferments with naturally occurring yeasts, and ages for 6-8 months in oak barrels. This is an intensely age-worthy wine, developing tertiary notes of nuts, butter and caramel with age. more info
Gaja Chardonnay Gaia & Rey 1984 750ml
Gaja Chardonnay Gaia & Rey 1984 750ml
Price: $499.00

A hedonistic wine with lusciously ripe flavors of guava, tangerine, honey, marzipan and oak spice, Gaia & Rey isn’t merely the best Italian Chardonnay--it may also be the very best Italian white. Impressively chewy in the mouth, the concentrated, ripe fruit is perfectly balanced by lively acidity that holds through the long, lingering finish. From Angelo's first Chardonnay vineyard that’s named for his oldest daughter, Gaia Gaja, and his grandmother, Clotilde Rey, Gaia & Rey is fermented with naturally occurring yeasts found on the grape skins and in the winery, giving the wine an added touch of exoticism. Intensely age-worthy, as this wine matures, tertiary notes of nuts, butter and caramel appear, illustrating why Gaia & Rey is one of Italy’s most collectable white wines. more info
Valentini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 1994 750ml
Valentini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 1994 750ml
Price: $699.00

A singular bottling from the hands of the “Lord of the Vines,” Edoardo Valentini himself, this brooding, umami-laden, knockout 1994 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a classic bottling of this cult wine. Now with more than twenty years of perfect maturity, this wine is coming into its own, offering its full profile of black licorice, smoke, ash, leather, and game. Remarkably vibrant and fresh even at more than two decades old, this vintage Valentini d’Abruzzo offers a patina of smokiness, notes of tar and black olives, and remarkable mellowness and integration to its components. In any vintage, Valentini's Montepulciano is a provocative, sublime rendition crafted from late-harvest grapes, made only in exceptional vintage years, and crafted only from the choicest grapes. Ripe, rich, and concentrated, Valentini's Montepulciano always needs a few years to coalesce; this '94 is a rare, gorgeous wonder, and it's our pleasure to put it in cellars like yours! more info
Bryant Family Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 750ml
Bryant Family Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 750ml
Price: $999.00

Succulent blue and black fruits dance with flower petals and spice, complemented by brooding, savory notes like incense, pencil lead, underbrush, torrefaction, and tar in the Bryant Family’s flagship wine in 2013. While this wine’s Cabernet Sauvignon fruit seems achingly pure, the wine is nonetheless fleshy and opulent, providing a riveting study in contrasts. Grippy and expressive, this wine grabs the palate and doesn’t let go--not that you want it to! Deriving from the Bryant Family’s prime thirteen-acre Pritchard Hill vineyard, this mono-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship wine of the estate, and it’s consistently a standard bearer of Napa Valley Cabernet. more info
Georges Roumier Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2012 750ml
Georges Roumier Bonnes Mares Grand Cru 2012 750ml
Price: $1,699.00

Rich, engrossing, and bewitching, the ’12 Bonnes-Mares form George Roumier is a collector gem. Juicy, pure red and black fruits rest on a bed of peonies, peppercorns, licorice, baking spices and earth in this broad-shouldered, seductive wine. A kaleidoscopic palate reveals new notes at every turn, and structured as this wine is, it will drink for decades to come. Bonnes-Mares is famous for having two different soil types--terres rouges, which imparts concentration and power, and terres blanches, which adds elegance and grace; this wine derives from Roumier’s four Bonnes Mares parcels, three terres blanches and one terres rouges, that total 3.5 acres. The estate vinifies the parcels separately, fermenting with natural yeasts and aging in oak, one-third new, for sixteen months. Just over 400 cases made. more info
