Balanced, dry, and caressing, the ’16 Brentino leaps from the glass in a profusion of succulent red and blue fruits, warm spices, crushed rocks, cedar wood, and kisses of tobacco and herbs. Rich yet focused, the Brentino wraps its sweet fruits around a sturdy mineral core, while racy acidity propels it to a satisfying, food-friendly finish. A blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, the grapes for this Bordeaux-style wine grow in volcanic, limestone-rich soils; after fermenting in stainless steel for about a week, the wine ages for a year in a combination of stainless steel and barrique, one-third new.

Tucked away in the hills at the bottom of the Asiago high plain located in northwest Veneto, Italy’s Breganze wine region is small, ancient, and fascinating. Breganze winemaking is dominated by a mix of both indigenous and international grapes, typifying the region’s much-traveled, multicultural history. Founded in 1947, Maculan is one of Breganze’s foremost winemakers, and the estate’s wines revel in the mixture of cultures that typify this winemaking region. Aided by their father, Fausto Maculan, Angela and Maria Vittoria helm the Maculan estate, and together they work in their cantina to craft wines of great typicity, terroir, and tradition from their limestone-rich, volcanic soil vineyards. Whether whites, reds or dessert wines, Maculan’s offerings pack a punch at their price points, and they offer unique spins on beloved international grapes--as well as showcase indigenous Venetian grape varietals--in delicious, food-friendly and affordable bottlings.
