Fontodi’s Outstanding ’05 Flaccianello! Two Must-Have Under $40 Wines!
March 14, 2018
A Note from Sergio

Nothing goes for the gut reaction like Sangiovese, the primary grape of Chianti, but then few grapes reward with the kind of intense, explosive pleasure that Sangiovese does. And few Chiantis are as unapologetically, boldly and wonderfully themselves as Fontodi's Flaccianello, today's featured wine. The Fontodi estate dates back to the sixteenth century, so it's fair to say that Sangiovese is in the blood of Sergio Manetti, the owner of the estate. Fontodi's Flaccianello is pure Sangiovese--it's a wine that tingles the nose, goes for the gusto, and tastes of the heart of Toscana.

If you're the kind of person who enjoys a wine that screams its heritage, if you're the kind of person who likes a wine that hits the heart and the gut as much as the head, and if you love Sangiovese's ability to be both elegant and wild at the same time, then Fontodi Flaccianello is the wine for you. I managed to score a few bottles of the 2005 Flaccianello, and, right now, this wine is in the heart of its sweet spot. 2005 was a sleeper vintage for Tuscan wines--the growing year was challenging, and the two vintages that bracketed it were easy to love. This '05 Flaccianello shows how a little time separates the good wines from the great; it's terrific.

Along with this sleeper vintage Flaccianello, I'm very happy to offer a pair of value wines that you'll want to pour for company. First, there is Le Mortelle's Vivia, a succulent and sea-swept white from the Antinori family's estate on the Maremma Coast. It's under $25 a bottle, and you'll want to drink it often. Finally, I secured a new allocation of López de Heredia's high-performing 2005 Rioja Reserva. We've sold through two previous allotments of this benchmark wine, and it's easy to see why--it's under $40 and drinks like it costs twice the price.

Upon release, the ’05 Flaccianello was hailed for its intense perfume, immediate accessibility, and pretty, vibrant fruit, but what a difference a decade makes! Now with almost 15 years of maturity, this Flaccianello layers its sweet red berries, succulent blue plums, and brambly black fruits with warm earth, worn saddle leather, potpourri and kisses of cedar, umami, black tea and moss. Time has tamed this wine’s acidity and mellowed its chewy tannins, and today this powerful Flaccianello glides with an electric, silky feel to a lingering, mineral-inflected, earthy finish. Crafted from organically grown Sangiovese, this wine ferments with only natural yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel for about three weeks before aging in oak barrels for at least eighteen months. This ’05 Flaccianello is sublime now and for the next decade. more info
