Once-In-a-Lifetime Wine, Giacomo Conterno 1961 Barolo
March 14, 2019
A Note from Sergio

When Giacomo Conterno founded his Barolo estate at the start of the twentieth century, he didn't own any vineyards. He did as traditional barolisti did and bought grapes from trusted vine-growers. Back then, there was often a division of winemaking labor. Some people grew grapes; other people made wine; only a few did both. In the early 1960s, Giacomo passed his estate to his two sons, Giovanni and Aldo. While Aldo later left to start his own estate, Giovanni remained at the family estate, and for a while, he stuck with the old ways, purchasing grapes and making his wine. In 1974, Giovanni bought the famed Cascina Francia vineyard, and he changed wine history when he began estate-bottling wine at Poderi Giacomo Conterno.

A couple of years ago, I was very excited to give my clients a chance to secure bottles of 1961 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino Riserva, a wine that dates from the time when Giovanni still bought his grapes from area growers. 1961 is a historic vintage for Giacomo Conterno because it's the year when Giacomo turned the estate over to his sons. But more than that, 1961 is a landmark vintage, a year that serious Barolo fans talk about in hushed tones. Giacomo Conterno's '61 Barolo Monfortino may be almost mythical in status, but it's not the only legendary wine that the estate made that vintage. The estate's normale Barolo is the other, and today I'm very proud to present Giacomo Conterno 1961 Barolo, a monumental wine in its own right.

There are many reasons you might want to put this '61 Giacomo Conterno Barolo in your cellar. It's historic, it's important, it's critically acclaimed, and it's a slice of Italian winemaking that will never come this way again. But even more, this Barolo is drop-dead gorgeous. Its elegance, complexity, delicacy, and beauty will blow you away--it's a once-in-a-lifetime wine!

Enjoy!

1961 is widely considered one of the great Piemonte vintages of the 1960s, and this Giacomo Conterno Barolo stands the test of time. This wine’s remarkable primary red and blue fruits dance against a framework of worn saddle leather, crushed herbs, dried rose petals, warm earth, and tertiary notes of autumn leaves, roasted game, and white truffles. At once ethereal and powerful, this Barolo floats on the palate while its spectacular minerality and surprising acidic core propel its silky, complex and kaleidoscopic finish. A magical wine, Conterno’s ’61 Barolo captivates from every angle, embodying its majestic vintage with its sheer finesse and breathtaking longevity. This 1961 Barolo dates from the years when the Giacomo Conterno estate still purchased their grapes from trusted local growers with prime vineyards in Monforte and Serralunga; this Barolo was crafted almost entirely by Giovanni, Giacomo’s son, in traditional methods. more info
