A Note from Sergio
From its chestnut and cypress trees to its steep hillsides, its tiny medieval town, and its crazy pockets of vineyards, Montalcino is a magical place. And that reason is Montalcino itself; it imbues everything it touches. You can taste it in the food, smell it in the air, and when the Brunello is good, you can breathe it into your nose, hold it in your mouth and swallow it whole. The stone, the earth, the water, the sun, the cypress, the olive trees, the cinghiali--it's all there, in every whiff, in every sip, and this is what I look for in a Brunello.
Today, I'm delighted to announce the release of the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio Abate from La Poderina. It's a wine that runs counter to many of the qualities that I usually use to choose my wines. It's not strictly traditionally made. It's not an artisanal, small producer. It's a Brunello priced at far less than what most really good Brunellos are priced at. However much it doesn't abide by most of my criteria, this La Poderina wine is delicious. At the end of the day, the taste of the wine guides me in my choices; I choose wines I like, wines I think that my clients will enjoy drinking, and wines that are, simply, delicious expressions of their type. La Poderina Brunello di Montalcino meets these criteria--and its cru Brunello Riserva does it with even more style and sophistication.
You can continue that Montalcino love with two bottles from Poggio di Sotto. Everyone loves this estate's wines. Floral and earthy, they smell like the air that surrounds the ancient stone villa, and somehow these Brunellos taste even better. This Brunello pair from 2007 and 2009 will do you right. Finally, I'm pleased to offer a new vintage of Antinori's Puglian Aglianico, Tormaresca 2011 Bocca di Lupo Castel del Monte. It's crazy good, and it will make your steaks sing!
