Four Powerful Vintages of Vigna d'Alceo, Collectable Soldera Riserva, and 2010 Baby Brunello

May 28, 2013
A Note from Sergio

Brother and sister Luca and Maurizia di Napoli run the Super-Tuscan estate Castello dei Rampolla. They resemble intellectual, aristocratic Italian versions of the farmers you see in upstate New York. They're serious people who are serious about their biodynamic farming. Ask Luca about why he chose to take the estate biodynamic in the '90s and his face lights up, his voice grows animated, and his passion crackles. "The soil, the earth, the light, the stars, the whole universe--it is all one," he says. "We grow to keep everything healthy, in balance. Happy."

The wines of Castello dei Rampolla illustrate both the serious, intellectual approach of the di Napoli duo and the vitality that biodynamic wines can impart. Today, I'm delighted to shine a spotlight on the 2008 Castello dei Rampolla Vigna d'Alceo, a wine that shimmers across the palate, seeming to scatter the stars in its wake. It's a wine that, along with the estate's other Super-Tuscan gem, Sammarco, IWM has carried since we first opened our doors more than a decade ago. I'm putting it in the company of three other vintages of the wine--the extraordinary 2001, the ripe 2003, and the structured 2006. Try them all.

I'm always proud to offer my clients Gianfranco Soldera's Riserva Brunellos, but I can't always give them a chance to get them at the country's lowest price. Today, I can. I'm happy to pair this collectable Montalcino wine with one that won't stretch the wallet, Collemattoni Rosso di Montalcino 2010. It's a fantastic introduction to the vintage, which looks to be outrageous.

Finally, I want to remind you about the Tinto for TECHO event that IWM is hosting on June 4, 2013. This special winemaker dinner features Piero Antinori, who will be pouring wines from his various estates, and benefits TECHO, a youth-led non-profit organization working to help people living in poverty conditions in the Caribbean and Latin America. It's going to be a very special night, and I'd love to see you there.
