Two Surprising Fontodi Releases! Perfect Prosecco! And Benchmark Castello dei Rampolla!
May 3, 2017
A Note from Sergio

Giovanni Manetti, the owner-winemaker of Fontodi, has both vision and style. He dresses like the vintage Hollywood ideal of a sophisticated Italian, and his wines reflect his polish and his elegance. But more than merely being fashionable, Manetti glows with passion for his native Toscana. He believes in its roots and its growth. Perhaps the best metaphor for this belief is his choice to build Fontodi's new cellar around a massive, ancient, towering tree. It would have been easier--and a lot less expensive--for Manetti to cut down that beautiful tree. He didn't because that tree is a powerful visual, symbolizing Fontodi's deep roots in Toscana and its constant, growing commitment to the future.

Today, I'm delighted to present a pair of new Fontodi releases that embody both Fontodi's honoring of its tradition and its striving for the future. First, there's Fontodi 2015 Meriggio, a Super-Tuscan white that I believe you should come to know and love. As with all of Fontodi's wines, this Sauvignon Blanc is organically grown, and the wine is made with fastidious, even maniacal attention. It's a unique bottling of the beloved grape--you can taste its Conca d'Oro terroir in its herbs and flowers--and it's delicious. Second, there's the inaugural vintage of Fontodi's newest Chianti Classico, 2014 La Filetta di Lamole Chianti Classico. Minuscule Lamole has been growing grapes for millennia, and Manetti has been wanting to make a wine from this ancient region for about as long as I've known him. This Chianti Classico makes his dream come true, and you Sangiovese fans owe it to yourself to enjoy it.

Not far from Fontodi's main holdings, indeed just across the golden bowl that is the Conca d'Oro, sits Castello dei Rampolla, a biodynamic estate and makers of some of the best under-the-radar Super Tuscans available. You'll find the estate's 2006 Vigna d'Alceo below, and it's perfect--it's mature, vibrant, elegant, aromatic, just wonderful! Finally, graduation, anniversary and wedding season is upon us. Summer is the right time to celebrate the love around you, so I've secured magnums of IWM's favorite Proseccos, Col Vetoraz Prosecco di Valdobbiadene. Pop this pure Italian sparkler at the start of one of your gatherings. It'll whet your guests' appetites and push your party into high gear!
