Is This $25 Rosso Your New Go-To Red? Quintarelli Flash Sale! And Antinori’s Rosato!
May 4, 2017
A Note from Sergio

Wine is no stranger to Italy's South. Some of Italy's best and strongest grapes--Aglianico, Nero d'Avola, and Primitivo--grow in the South's arid climate, making for millennia of powerful wine. But you'd never know it! Until recently, southern Italian producers lacked both the economic structure and the good name necessary to successfully market wine themselves. Instead, they were quietly selling their grapes to winemakers in the North and exporting them to France.

Things are changing. In the last few decades, the lower corner of the Boot has hit the radar of wine-lovers. Bolstered by investment, southern winemakers are restoring old grapes and make quality wines. The rediscovery of thousands of antique breeds--many of them rescued from the brink of extinction--has helped shaped the region's new reputation for being a source of undiscovered gems. The world is coming to know what Italians have known for a long time: Only the South, the Italian territory most under vine, offers such a wide range of gorgeous, exotic wine. Only the South--once maligned and near ruin--has such deep winemaking potential.

Antinori is one of the winemakers who understands the potential of Italy's southern regions, and the family's Tormaresca estate in Puglia proves it. I've been happy to bring you Tormaresca's mono-varietal Aglianico for some time, and today, I'm very pleased to bring you a new Tormaresca wine, the estate's 2012 Castel del Monte Rosso Trentangeli. This $25 Rosso is a tasty blend of mostly Aglianico tempered by international grapes. It's mineral-laden and brambly, and it packs a serious punch for its price point. If you've been on the fence about discovering Puglia's gems, get this wine--but get a few bottles because you'll want to pop it more than once! And for a fuller Antinori experience, pair it with the Guado al Tasso Scalabrone Rosato offered below. This is a hearty blush Super-Tuscan wine that's simply delicious!

Don't miss our first Quintarelli flash sale--we've never offered so many mind-bending wines for so little!

Giuseppe Quintarelli Valpolicella 2009 750ml
Giuseppe Quintarelli Valpolicella 2009 750ml
Price: $84.99

The product of an excellent yet ripe harvest, this ’09 Valpolicella bursts with brambly berries and juicy cherries, crushed river rocks, smoke, black licorice and freshly cut herbs. At once vibrant and silky, this wine studs the cheeks with polished tannins as it builds to an energetic finish that dwells in tension between its sweet fruits and savory elements. Crafted from a mélange of indigenous Veneto grape varietals chosen with Quintarelli’s legendarily strict grape selection, this appassimento-technique Valpolicella spent seven years in Slavonian oak botti before bottling, a protocol unheard of in the region but one the estate uses to create nuanced and structured, complex wine. An opportunity to experience Quintarelli magic at a fraction of the price of the estate's Amarone, this Valpolicella is a true "baby Amarone." more info

Giuseppe Quintarelli Alzero 2007 1.5L
Price: $999.00

2007 challenged Veneto’s winemakers with tempestuous weather, and this Alzero vintage is a towering triumph. Christmas cake, crushed flower petals, pencil lead, warm cigar wrapper and earth frame the luscious red and black fruits in this majestic, caressing ’07 Alzero. At once powerful and nimble, this Alzero is a study in contrasts, a kaleidoscopic wine that suffuses the palate with a brocade-like texture and offers years of exceptional drinking pleasure. As with the estate’s Amarone, Quintarelli treats Alzero’s grapes (a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot) with the appassimento technique, drying the grapes in single layers upon straw or plastic mats for 60 to 100 days to concentrate and intensify the flavor; it’s also the sole Quintarelli wine that matures in barriques, where it ages first for two or three years in French oak, followed by four years in Slavonian oak. more info
