A Note from Sergio
As with so many Italian producers, Ornellaia is iconoclastic. Its sleek edges gleam with corporate efficiency, but it still holds a very personal edge. It's clearly a community. As you approach the cellar, you see the name of the winery spelled out in five-foot tall flower vines. It's a sign of the humanity that drives this winery, something that's reinforced by the entryway to the cellar, decorated by four ceramic fountains made by a local artist, each one depicting the four seasons as interpreted by wine. Every year the Frescobaldi family commissions an artist draw a label to commemorate the new vintage of Ornellaia by creating special labels for large-format bottlings, giving individual faces to the vintage.
It's an eclectic, exuberant atmosphere that complements the James Bond styling of the wine cellar itself, a great expanse of shining stainless steel, glass and mechanized ballet of people busy doing their jobs. Ornellaia feels like an ideal convergence of the natural world, the necessary mechanics, the corporate entity, and the human touch. And this ideal convergence helps to explain why year in and year out, the estate makes wines that seem to reach out and pull you by your ears to the glass.
Today, I'm pleased to announce the release of the 2012 Ornellaia, the flagship wine from Tenuta dell'Ornellaia. Axel Heinz and his team have a gift. No matter the challenges of the vintage, they manage to craft wines that are delicious, and this '12 Ornellaia, product of a warm and dry year, is no exception. It's a bottle that throws its arms wide and welcomes you; it's a gracious, generous host. Along with this release, I'm very pleased to present new allocations of wines you might know and love: Antinori's '08 Barolo Riserva from their Prunotto estate, and several vintages of five of Angelo Gaja's wines, all in double magnums. It's a bounty for wine lovers, and I'm excited to present these bottles to you!
