A beautifully made Chianti is a wonderful thing because a well-wrought Chianti transfers its terroir with breathtaking transparency. Visit a Chianti producer, taste his or her wines, go home to New York City or Chicago or Miami or Denver, open one of those producer's bottles, pour that wine, and just one whiff will immediately transport you to the home of that wine. Chianti and its main grape, Sangiovese, have sat at the center of Tuscan winemaking for millennia, and there are good reasons for it. Chianti sings its roots in its dusty cherry-berry-earthy-herby-flowery palate. It makes food dance. It can age for decades. And it's deeply underappreciated.

Today, I'm very proud to present a new Chianti producer to IWM's Sangiovese lovers, Tenuta Trecciano. A relatively new estate on ancient vine-growing land, the most special thing about Tenuta Trecciano is its red and chalky soils. High in iron ore, Trecciano's vineyards are ideal for the tough-skinned Sangiovese, but they're also excellent for the estate's international grapes. Trecciano grows grapes that burst with flavors, and its team turns these grapes into mineral-laden, terroir-driven wines. Try the estate's 2015 Terra Rosso Chianti Colli Senesi Riserva featured below. It's a delicious Chianti Riserva, and I think you'll really enjoy it.
