20-Year-Old Valentini, Gaja Brunello Sale, and the “Sassicaia of Sardinia”
November 13, 2014
A Note from Sergio

A resolute old-timer, Edoardo Valentini was perhaps the most iconoclastic of Italy's iconoclastic winemakers. He brooked no modern conventions. He didn't talk to the press, and when he did, he didn't say much about how he made his wine. But his work changed the way that people understood his region, Abruzzo, and the grapes he chose to use, Trebbiano and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Valentini died in 2006, but Valentini's wines live on. Their startling naturalness, their individual quirks, their full personalities, and their indescribable deliciousness have forever altered history for Abruzzo winemaking and, indeed, Italian winemaking.

Today, I'm proud to offer a beautiful twenty-year-old bottle of Valentini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, and this extraordinary bottle is just hitting its prime, and this textured, mind-blowing red has years ahead of it. If you're a serious collector, a true aficionado of Italian wine, or a wine-lover with an adventurous, trailblazing spirit, you owe it to yourself to experience what this one man's quiet revolution tastes like. This wine is unlike any other we sell; it's a rich, savory, wild ride on a magic carpet, and I look forward to hearing where it took you.

From one iconoclast to another--or to others, as is the case in today's offers. I'm very happy to bring you five vintages each of Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello Rennina and Sugarille from Angelo Gaja's estate in Montalcino. Spanning old to new vintages, these wines give a panoramic view of Gaja's work in Montalcino. Finally, I'm pleased to bring in a new allocation of Agricola Punica Barrua 2010, a vintage that might be the best yet from this collaboration between Giacomo Tachis, Sassicaia's Sebastiano Rosa and a wine collective in Sardinia. This wine offers a tremendous, delicious bang for its $40 bucks. Drink it now, drink it next summer. I know you'll fall in love.
