Debuting a 2017 Trio of Classic, Delectable Wines from François Gay!
November 13, 2019
A Note from Sergio

Media-shy, taciturn, and deeply artistic, François Gay has arguably set the standard for iconoclastic winemakers in his Côte de Beaune region, and his son, Pascal, who now heads the domaine, walks very much in his father's footsteps. People call François Gay the "Henri Jayer of the Beaune" because the wines are that pure, that expressive and that terroir-driven (and also because their maker is that unique). But if you've never heard of François Gay or drunk the estate's wines, you're not alone. Gay's wines are very much an insider's secret. Gay's Burgundies are among the most difficult Beaune wines to procure because the domaine's production is severely limited--and because the estate's wines are so good. IWM's Burgheads snap up every new vintage more or less upon release, which is smart because IWM is one of only a handful of US retailers who gets to sell François Gay Burgundies.

Today, I'm proud to debut a trio of Gay's wines from 2017: the estate's affordable and delicious Chorey-les-Beaune, its old-vine Aloxe-Corton, and its sauvage but elegant Corton-Renardes Grand Cru. 2017 was something of a gift to Burgundy's makers and to Burgundy lovers. After the tough, low yield vintage of 2016, Burgundy's vignerons were looking for a break, and 2017 gave it to them. It was a lovely, easy-going growing year that ended with a bountiful, healthy harvest. 2017 was something of a boon to Burgundy makers, and the year's wines are a blessing to their many fans--especially today's trio from François Gay. If you love fine Burgundy, you're going to want all three of these new releases; they're exquisite, and they'll drinking beautifully almost as soon as they hit your table.

Enjoy!

Round yet lively, and fruit-laden yet earthy, this ’17 Aloxe-Corton offers a rustic, elegant take on its vintage. Francois Gay Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2017 750ml
Francois Gay Corton Renardes Grand Cru 2017 750ml
Price: $139.99

A kaleidoscopic, slightly feral wine, François Gay’s ’17 Corton-Renardes lives up to its name. Ripe, rich cherries and berries cavort with mushrooms, fresh loam, smoky minerals, pressed violet petals, licorice and a touch of animale in this captivating, silky wine. This Corton-Renardes shows beautiful balance among its elements; chewy tannins find their match in elegant, persistent acidity, while sweet fruits meld with savory minerals. This is a gorgeous Corton-Renardes! François Gay’s "tête de cuvée," this Corton-Renardes derives from a tiny limestone and clay vineyard just above Corton-Bressandes, and it is a consistent hit with IWM’s Burgundy-loving clients. This ’17 Corton-Renardes delivers on the wine’s reputation, and this vintage is especially dense and elegant. more info
