Introducing Schiena Vini’s Artisanal Puglian Gems!
November 15, 2019
A Note from Sergio

In the last few decades, Italy's South has seen something of an agricultural renaissance, and southern winemakers have restored old grape vines, planted new ones, and turned towards making quality wines. This interest in quality coupled with the rediscovery and nurturing of ancient grape varietals--many of them rescued from near extinction--have helped the region gain a new sterling reputation for boutique winemakers and exceptional wines. These days, adventurous wine enthusiasts are combing Campania, Basilicata, Sicilia, Sardegna, and Puglia, knowing that they'll find more than just the well-known big reds--they'll discover outstanding new wines. Only the South, the Italian territory most under vine, offers such a wide range of gorgeous, exotic drinks. Only the South--once maligned and near ruin--has such deep winemaking potential.

Enter the Puglian estate I'm introducing today, Schiena Vini. With its home in the heart of Puglian wine territory, Schiena Vini is dedicated to growing indigious Puglian grapes like Primitvo and Negroamaro, though it also grows international grapes, and this family-run, sustainable estate makes some of the best "big reds" that you've never heard about. Today, I'm delighted to present three beautiful, brooding and delicious 2017 wines from Schiena Vini: its velvety Enneoro Negroamaro, its succulent Tre Compari Primitivo, and its bold Primitivo di Manduria. These are wines you'll reach for with every bite of spaghetti puttanesca, roasted duck, chili or lasagna, and every sip will remind you that Italy's south is a great place to find unique, captivating wines that don't break the bank.

Enjoy!
