A Note from Sergio

In just a couple of days most of us will be gathered around a table with our loved ones eating what is probably America's most distinctive meal, Thanksgiving. In getting ready for your Thanksgiving festivities, you or your family probably have plenty of last-minute shopping going on right now. Where to get the turkey, yams, and cranberries? Who's going to bake the pies? And which wine is the right wine?

Wine people love this time of year, packed with holidays, because they get a chance to prove their skills and play the food-and-wine matching game. Holiday meals offer thousands upon thousands of wines that would be perfect--or not! So how do you know which wine to pick, and what if you pick the wrong one? Every book quotes the clichés: "match like flavors" or "what grows together goes together." But most consumers, those people who don't taste wine for a living, don't know what a wine tastes like before they've opened a bottle, sniffed and sipped. I mean, even Chardonnay has at least as many styles as there are vineyard that grow it.

Here is my advice to my friends: Wine should be fun, especially during the holidays. It shouldn't be work. You shouldn't have to stress about it. But know that every bottle of wine, like food, has a time and place when it is most appealing. That's why I suggest you leave the pairing game to the sommeliers who spend twelve-hour days six days a week creating matches--or, alternatively, you explore on your own and accept that sometimes you'll make a bad match (while other times you'll find extraordinary pairings). Today's eLetter lets you take either route. You'll find more than 260 wines, all at special pricing. Pick your own wines for your holiday season, or ask an IWM portfolio manager to help you. Either way, you'll have fun!

Enjoy!

Ruby red with violet highlights, the color of this refreshing, food-friendly Montepulciano d’Abruzzo hints at its aroma of purple fruits and wildflowers, both complemented by spice, earth and a touch of minerals. Fresh and harmonious, this ’13 Montepulciano is an affordable, delightful go-to red, especially for summertime. Bright, pure red fruits dance against a backdrop of saline minerals, crushed wildflower petals, and kisses of spice and earth in this caressing, energetic Rosato. A sweet inner perfume of cherries and berries finds its complement in the savory minerals that propel this beguiling wine to a harmonious finish. San Giuliano Roero Arneis 2011 750ml
Price: $22.00
Currently Unavailable.

This fresh-faced winsome wine hails from the Roero region of Piemonte, and although “Arneis” means “difficult child,” San Giuliano’s interpretation is anything but churlish. Delicately floral in scent, ripe white peaches and green apples greet your palate, and a mouth-watering acidity finishes the experience, readying you for your next bite of food or sip of wine. Drinking now, delightfully. more info
Ca dei Mandorli Brachetto d'Acqui Donne Boschi 2015 750ml
Ca dei Mandorli Brachetto d'Acqui Donne Boschi 2015 750ml
Price: $22.00
Currently Unavailable.

Nothing goes better with chocolate than light, fizzy and flavorful Ca dei Mandorli Brachetto d'Acqui, yet this wine also perfectly accompanies cheesecake or cream-based desserts. From the Piemonte region of northwest Italy. Brachetto d’Aqui, a slightly fizzy but not overly sweet red, is similar in aroma and taste profile to Recioto from the Veneto--you get the strawberry and floral notes on the nose, but Brachetto edges more towards the medium-bodied palate. Deriving from the estate’s southeast-facing Donne dei Boschi vineyard, the grapes first ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel, followed by fermentation in autoclave to create the persistent perlage in this pleasantly fizzy wine. With its notes of bitter almond, roses and berries, Ca dei Mandorli’s Brachetto is an ideal dessert wine--but it’s also terrific as a complement to French toast, pancakes or other sweet brunch items! more info
Pojer & Sandri Vin dei Molino Rosato 2013 750ml
Pojer & Sandri Vin dei Molino Rosato 2013 750ml
Price: $22.99
Currently Unavailable.

Bone dry with an abundance of wild berries, a rich mouthfeel and vibrant, tangy finish, this mono-varietal wine is pure Alto Adige. It’s 100% Rotberger, a grape that’s a cross between Schiava and Riesling Renano, and it’s a light, refreshing red wine that drinks like a white. Given that it hails from a polyglot land where everyone speaks multiple languages and dialects, the unusualness of this grape and this wine makes sense. More importantly, the wine is light, refreshing, scented with wildflowers and sunlit crushed berries, showing notes of black currants and ripe elderberry, and finishing with spice and piquant bitter almond. Perfect for apperitivi or lunch, this Rosato is drinking now. more info

Austrian rosé has appealing purity, transparency and aromatics that stem from its Alpine terroir, and this ’11 rosé from Zweigelt embodies this ideal. This dry Danube Rosé shows its altitude in its structure, and its stainless-steel vinification in its clear, pure palate. Salmon pink in the glass, this mono-varietal Zweigelt, an indigenous varietal that is Austria’s most popular grape, is fresh and juicy, laden with strawberries and herbs, touched with minerality and a zippy acidity. more info

Le Mortelle Vivia Maremma Toscana DOC 2015 750ml
Le Mortelle Vivia Maremma Toscana DOC 2015 750ml
Price: $24.99

2015 offered the Maremma coast a cool, classic vintage with perfectly balanced, ripe grapes; the resulting wine reflects its growing year in a fresh, harmonious palate that is both juicy and bright. Orchard and citrus fruits dance with fresh-cut herbs, lemon zest, crushed white flowers and a kiss of savory minerals in this kinetic, aromatic ’15 Vivia Maremma Toscana. This textured, full-bodied ’15 Vivia Maremma balances its bright, bracing acidity with its copious dry extract and its piquant minerality--it’s a food-friendly beauty that will please the palates of wine-lovers. A blend of 50% Vermentino, 40% Viognier and 10% Ansonica, the grapes for this wine fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel, and the wine aged for about three months in vat followed by three more months in bottle before release, making for a drinking experience that punches well above its $25 price point. more info
