Rocche dei Manzoni Retrospective! 18 Superb Wines from Eight Terrific Vintages!
November 21, 2019
A Note from Sergio

When you walked into the late, great Valentino Migliorini's estate in Piemonte, you'd often hear the blaring of "The Flight of the Valkyries." That was Valentino: large as life, grand as glamour, and energetic as his wines. Valentino passed in 2007, but he changed Piemonte forever with his innovations--and he did it as someone who was an outsider. Valentino wasn't born into winemaking; he wasn't even born in Piemonte. He was the owner of a Michelin-starred restaurant in Emilia-Romagna, the home of Lambrusco, prosciutto di parma, and Parmesan. Because of this outsider status, Valentino's choice to bring Chardonnay and Champagne-styled wines to Piemonte, to age Nebbiolo and Barbera in barriques, and to blend Nebbiolo and Barbera (or Nebbiolo and Cabernet) don't feel that strange. With his newcomer's vision, Valentino brought radical change to Piemonte and forever altered the face of Italian wine.

Today, I'm very proud to bring you eighteen glorious bottlings from Rocche dei Manzoni. Featuring vintages as old as 2004 and as recent as 2012, this list gives you a glimpse into Rocche dei Manzoni's past, when Valentino was still making wine, as well as into its present, when it's still going very strong. You'll find beautiful Barolos as well as exciting Super-Piemontese blends, and a lot of these wines are super affordable. A lot of people peg Rocche dei Manzoni as a modernist winery--and it's true that the estate loves its barriques--but in truth, these wines sit somewhere in the middle of tradition and modernism. The Barolos see long macerations on the skins, and they're made with an eye for extreme age-ability, not immediate enjoyment. If you're looking to change up your Barolo repertoire, you should look into these big, bold wines--you'll be glad you did.
