Debuting the Splendid 2018 Vintage of Chavy-Chouet’s “Insider” Burgundies!
November 6, 2019
A Note from Sergio

You won't often see Chavy-Chouet's wines on Robert Parker or the Wine Spectator, Burghound or Vinous, but this under-the-radar Burgundy estate is an IWM client favorite. Romaric Chavy-Chouet was trained by his father, Hubert, the domaine's founder, and he's helmed Chavy-Chouet since his dad passed away about five years ago. Romaric makes some of Burgundy's best values from his multiple parcels scattered across the regions of Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, St.Aubin, Volnay, and Pommard. Authentic, exacting, singular and delicious, Chavy-Chouet's Burgundies are precisely the kind of wines that I love to champion--even better, these wines way over-perform their relatively modest price points.

Whenever Chavy-Chouet's wines hit our shelves, they sell out, and today, I'm delighted to announce the debut of two of Chavy-Chouet's outstanding 2018 wines, its Meursault Les Narvaux and Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères. Hot and dry, 2018 is a terrific year for red Burgundy, but you have to pick and choose the vintage's whites. This Chavy-Chouet duo highlights the vintage's tensions between ripeness and energy, and between opulence and precision--these white Burgundies are fascinating! You can enjoy today's Les Narvaux and Les Enseignères right away--but you can also cellar them for drinking five years down the road.

Priced at less than $75 a bottle, both of these Chavy-Chouet 2018 debuts will make white wine lovers and Burgheads very, very happy--and they'll likely make some new converts to the cult of Chavy-Chouet along the way.

Chavy Chouet Meursault Les Narvaux 2018 750ml
Chavy Chouet Meursault Narvaux 2018 750ml
Price: $74.99

2018 saw a warm, dry growing year for white Burgundy, and Chavy-Chouet made the most of the vintage in this rich, complex, mineral-laden ’18 Meursault Les Narvaux. Luscious citrus and orchard fruits layer with subtle scents of wood, warm river rocks, and toasted nuts in this broad-shouldered yet fresh mid-weight wine. Enjoyable about as soon as it hits your table, this wine will drink wonderfully over the medium term. Situated above the premier cru appellations of Genevrières and Poruzots, the soils of Les Narvaux are clayey, chalky and shallow, and Chavy-Chouet’s 1.2-acre plot boasts vines that average sixty years of age; this proximity gives the wine the power and decadence of Genevrières and the flintiness of Poruzots. Representing one of the many Meursault vineyards that makes a strong claim for premier cru status, this old-vine Meursault ferments in tank before aging in barrel, 20% new, for about a year before bottling without fining or filtration. more info
Chavy Chouet Puligny Montrachet Les Enseigneres 2018 750ml
Chavy Chouet Puligny Montrachet Enseigneres 2018 750ml
Price: $74.99

A rich, ripe Enseignères vintage, this ’18 feels mouth-filling, textured and vibrant, marrying its crisp orchard fruits with succulent stone fruits, almonds, white flowers, and flint in an aromatic, broad-shouldered palate. You’ll be tempted to drink this seductive Enseignères immediately, but it’ll age nicely over the medium term. Although a village-level wine, Chavy-Chouet Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères has always been an insider’s wine because it lies directly beneath the grand cru Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet and shares much of the same power, richness and style at a fraction of the price. Deriving from the estate’s 2.5-acre clay and limestone Les Enseignères plot with 65-year-old vines, this wine ferments in tank before aging in barrel, 20% new, for about a year before bottling without fining or filtration. more info
