Gaja Retrospective, Ten Dollar Pinot, Vintage Sammarco and More
November 8, 2012

A Note from Sergio

You have to admire Angelo Gaja. He consistently makes outrageously good wines--this fact alone makes the man well deserving of respect. Then there's the fact that his wines are like a secret handshake among wine-lovers; wine trends may come and go, but for the past few decades, were you to plunk a bottle of Gaja on the table in front of anyone with a sophisticated palate, you'd automatically distinguish yourself as citizen of the wine world.

Today, I'm delighted to feature a jewel-like retrospective of Gaja's single-vineyard Brunello, Pieve di Santa Restituta Sugarille, one that includes recent benchmark vintages as well as the '96, Gaja's first true release of this wine after he renovated the vineyard. Just as you'd expect from this winemaker who's a wizard both at making fine wine and at bringing it to the public who'd most appreciate it, this Brunello balances on the knife's edge between traditional Brunello brooding power with accessibility. It's a wine that's delicious both to people who know and love Brunello and people who've never tasted it. And, of course, it comes with all of Gaja's exacting standards. When a vintage doesn't cut mustard, he doesn't make it. He's uncompromising, and the wine reflects his vision.

I'm also happy to say that IWM's online promotion continues for just one more day. Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello Sugarille 2007 750ml
Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello Sugarille 2007 750ml
Price: $159.00

A powerful, brooding embodiment of its benchmark vintage, this ’07 Brunello Sugarille bursts with succulent red and black fruits, smoky earth, licorice, exotic spices, and warm saddle leather. This wine balances its sheer power with its purity, rolling across the palate to a lingering, textured finish that’s studded with chewy tannins and redolent of smoky minerals. Enjoyable now with more than a decade of perfect maturity, this ripe vintage Brunello is drinking wonderfully, but its underlying structure and fine balance means it’ll drink for years, even decades, to come! This cru Brunello comes from the historic 12-acre Sugarille vineyard site that dates back to 1541 and the hands of Italy's most recognized and controversial winemaker, Angelo Gaja. Deriving from the southwestern-facing Sugarille site rich in white clay, the grapes for this cru wine ferment for a month in temperature-controlled stainless steel, and the wine ages for a year each in barriques and in botti. more info
