Aldo Conterno’s 2015 Barolo Quartet--and Four More Superb 2016 Wines!
October 1, 2019
A Note from Sergio

Piemonte's recent vintage pair of 2015 and 2016 is something you hardly ever see in the region: two historic back-to-back growing years that produced cellar-worthy Barolo wines. In the hands of the right producers and coming from the best vineyards, the recent 2015 and 2016 duo calls to mind the legendary pairs of 1989 and 1990, or 2004 and 2005--vintages when nature blessed the Langhe Hills with wines of substance and structure. It's hard to go wrong with years like these, but some Piemonte wine estates shine even more brightly in 2015 and 2016, and Poderi Aldo Contero is a star.

Today, I'm very proud to present eight gorgeous Aldo Conterno wines from 2015 and 2016: the estate's glorious 2015 Barolo Quartet (Barolo Bussia, Barolo Cicala, Barolo Colonnello, and Barolo Romirasco) along with four select 2016 wines, Aldo's Conca Tre Pile Barbera d'Alba, Bussiador Chardonnay, Il Favot Langhe Nebbiolo, and Langhe Rosso. If you want the most out of Aldo's ethereal, electric '15 Barolo wines, you'll want to shelve them for a few years--but no worries! Aldo's four '16 releases give you plenty of enjoyment while you wait.

We sold through the original allocation of these wines in a matter of hours--enjoy!

Poderi Aldo Conterno Langhe Rosso 2016 750ml
Poderi Aldo Conterno Langhe Rosso 2016 750ml
Price: $29.99

Juicy cherries and brooding berries cavort with peppery spices, crushed wild herbs, warm earth, wildflowers and tobacco in the muscular, rich ’16 Langhe Rosso. Chewy tannins meet electric acidity, while savory underpinnings complement the silky wine’s copious fruit. This is a food-friendly, highly pleasurable wine that drinks immediately yet has the structure to age for a few years. A blend of 80% old-vine Freisa, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, Aldo Conterno’s Langhe Rosso, which has replaced the estate's famed Quartetto, is an incredible bottle of everyday red. Conterno harvests the grapes from vineyards in Bussia, then vinifies the wine in temperature-controlled stainless steel; this wine ages first in steel and finishes for a few months in barriques before bottling. more info
Poderi Aldo Conterno Langhe Nebbiolo Il Favot 2016 750ml
Poderi Aldo Conterno Langhe Nebbiolo Il Favot 2016 750ml
Price: $69.99

In the outstanding 2016 vintage, Aldo Conterno’s Il Favot Langhe Nebbiolo performs like a “baby Barolo.” Bursting with succulent red and blue fruits, new leather, licorice, rose petals, cigar wrapper and earth, this wine awards the senses with Barolo’s telltale perfumes and its ethereal mouth-feel. While not as structured as a Barolo, the ’16 Il Favot Langhe Nebbiolo nonetheless captures some of Barolo’s ethereal nature, filling the mouth with textured tannins as it slowly reveals myriad flavor notes and builds to a lingering finish. Deriving from younger Nebbiolo vines grown in various vineyards in Monforte d’Alba, the grapes ferment in stainless steel for about eight days, and the wine ages for five or six months in stainless steel, followed by eighteen months in barrique, all new. more info
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala 2015 750ml
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Cicala 2015 750ml
Price: $179.00

Aldo Conterno’s Barolo Cicala presents a polished, sophisticated profile of the 2015 vintage. Fistfuls of brooding blue and crisp red fruits layer with tarry earth, forest floor, white truffles, rose petals and incense in this pretty, racy wine. Fine-grained tannins meet vivid acidity in this Barolo’s rolling, round finish that resonates with a harmonious, lingering gong. The second "cru" from Bussia Soprana, Cicala is the most fruit-driven, but also the most tannic and most age-worthy of the estate’s trio of single-vineyard Barolos. Deriving from vines between 40-45 years old grown in soils that are a mix of clay and limestone, this wine spends 28 months in Slavonian oak casks before bottling. Just 500 cases made. more info
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Vigna Romirasco 2015 750ml
Poderi Aldo Conterno Barolo Vigna Romirasco 2015 750ml
Price: $299.00

The ’15 Barolo Romirasco weds opulence with energy, intensity with focus, and lushness with liveliness--it’s a wonderful wine that celebrates the ripeness of its vintage with polish and sophistication. Luscious red and blue fruits burst from the glass, framed with peppery spices, white truffles, tarry earth, smoky minerals, new leather and potpourri. Velvety tannins cling to the cheeks as the wine revels in its kaleidoscopic bevy of notes and builds to a mineral-inflected, satisfying finish. You can drink this wine with decanting--or cellar and drink for decades to come. Crafted from fruit grown on vines aged 50 to 55 years old in mineral-rich soils, grapes ferment for about 30 days; the wine ages for about 28 months in Slavonian oak casks, followed by rest in bottle before release. About 500 cases made. more info
