Before 2016 Sassicaia – the Greatest Vintage Since the Groundbreaking 100 Point Immortal from 1985

A SPECIAL IWM PRESENTATION

FINAL ALLOCATION OF #1 WINE OF THE YEAR: 2015 SASSICAIA

This 2015 exhibits everything that you’d want from Sassicaia - and more - because of its winning combination of winemaking savoir-faire, world-class terroir, old vine fruit, and an outstanding vintage. It is unarguably stunning."

No doubt about it, the 2016 Sassicaia is one of the hottest wines ever sold at IWM. But before the 2016, there was the 2015 incarnation that was the WINE OF THE YEAR – and with good reason. Regardless of the accolade, our recommendation would be to buy the 2015 while you wait for the 2016 to age. There is no doubt about it, the 2015 and 2016 are the greatest back-to-back vintages since the 2006 and 2007. You have heard us say it before, there are numerous reason s to be excited about the ripe and inviting 2015 vintage in Tuscany – it is a year that rivals the response to 2010 and 2007 – and even the immortal 1985. Mother Nature was bountiful in this ancient winemaking region, and we saw the response first with the 2015 Sassicaia igniting the storm with 98 points and James Suckling calling the Super Tuscan patriarch “A classic Sassicaia!” Then it was it was the 98-point, Antinori patriarch that was described as, “A great Tignanello. A little more Sangiovese than usual. Best since the legendary 1997?” Then it was the 2015 Solaia with a 100-100-point perfection, begging the question, “Is it the greatest Solaia ever?”

Sassicaia needs no introduction, simply put it is Italy’s most iconic and collected wine. The 2015 was another huge success for this pioneering estate. Sassicaia makes a good wine in any vintage – Mother Nature really dictates the style of the release, not the cellar. In 2015, we got just that, a riper and richer Sassicaia from the warmer growing season with characteristics that draw comparisons to the first 100-point Sassicia in 1985, 2007, and 2009. James Suckling rated the 2015 Sassicaia 98 points noting: Shows the warmth and generosity of the vintage.” And Monica Larner may have summed it up best, “It will age and evolve beautifully, but the 2015 Sassicaia can also be enjoyed in the medium-term. This wine is all about the here and now.” The 2015 offers the signature Sassicaia nose that can only be Sassicaia and will transport you to Bolgheri; this is a fuller style of Sassicaia that can appeal to the Napa enthusiast and the classic claret collector.

We simply do get many opportunities to revisit the 2015 vintage, as demand for the iconic Sassicaia always outweighs the supply and we always sell out of our first allocation quickly. Today, we are offering this final allocation of the of 2015 Sassicaia to our loyal Super Tuscan clients at special pricing. You simply cannot have enough of this Wine of the Year.

ADDITIONAL NOTES AND REVIEWS

2015 TENUTA SAN GUIDO SASSICAIA
98 Points, James Suckling: "Love the aromas to this young red with blackcurrants, sage, cinnamon and five-spice character. Changes all the time. Full-bodied, dense and powerful with a ripe and rich tannin backbone that gives form and beauty to the ripe and beautiful fruit. Tight and very long. Approachable now but will reward more in five to six years. A classic Sassicaia." 1/18

98 Points - Decanter: "This is certainly an exceptional Sassicaia, with a sumptuous nose of ripe, creamy black and red fruit with cedar and spice notes. The colour is by no means dark (as is often the case with Sassicaia), and the impression on the palate is one of controlled power underpinned by gorgeous sweetness and flowing elegance. This is a very confident wine with real authority and presence, beginning with a magnificent attack of rich cassis and ripe griotte cherry followed by cigar box and leather notes, and a long finish of savoury bay leaf and minerals. It's deceptively structured, the tannins wonderfully ripe, creamy and finely textured, while the juicy acidity also suggests that this wine has a very long life ahead of it. This 2015 exhibits everything that you’d want from Sassicaia - and more - because of its winning combination of winemaking savoir-faire, world-class terroir, old vine fruit, and an outstanding vintage. It is unarguably stunning." 2/18

97 Points, Monica Larner, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Having followed this wine's evolution in barrel for the past few years, it is an honor to evaluate the final product. This Sassicaia has blossomed since my previous encounters with it as a young, awkward adolescent. The long-awaited 2015 Bolgheri Sassicaia represents a tremendous effort that comes together with seamless precision and focus. This is a confident and proud red wine from Tuscany. Starting with the primary material at hand, you sense the quality of fruit thanks to the wine's beautifully dark appearance and the rich texture it offers to the palate. The acidity is integrated, but more freshness still would have been welcomed in my view (and would also contribute to its longevity). The bouquet is amplified both in terms of volume and length. Its playlist includes dark berry fruit, spice, leather, licorice and roasted coffee bean. Yet, the mouthfeel is extremely graceful and silky. The wine's undisputed pedigree is showcased on the palate. It should also be noted that this edition of Sassicaia feels more ready and open to me. It will age and evolve beautifully, but the 2015 Sassicaia can also be enjoyed in the medium-term. This wine is all about the here and now." 2/18
