Piedmont's Best Kept Secret - 60th Anniversary Bottle and a Rare $29 Noble Nebbiolo Riserva Value Find.
October 15, 2020

A Best Kept Secret Under $29 is Shared. The Limited Production Mountain Wine of Alto Piemonte Delivers Rare Value from the Noble Nebbiolo. Plus the 60th Anniversary Riserva–Just 250 Cases Produced.

“The Produttori di Carema cooperative has been on a tear in recent vintages. These traditionally crafted mountain wines offer so much Nebbiolo character. This year the range includes a new offering, the Carema Selezione, bottled to celebrate the winery’s 60th anniversary.” - Antonio Galloni

Here is another David and Goliath tale from the hills of Piemonte that we love to share. If you appreciate Italian wines, you have heard the strong and positive words surrounding the classic 2016 vintage and the prized Nebbiolo-based wines of Piemonte’s Barolo and Barbaresco regions. It is simply one of the greatest vintages of our lifetime – joining the ranks of 2010, 2004, 1996, and 1989, to name a few. But what you should know is that these powerful words extend well beyond the boundaries of the King and Queen of Wines, and apply to the up-and-coming winemaking regions of Alto Piemonte. In particular, you heard us scream about Gattinara, which lies 90 miles to the north of Barbaresco. The region undoubtedly stands out, especially with the new project from Giacomo Conterno (Monfortino) – Nervi-Conterno.

However, Alto Piemonte does not end with Gattinara! In fact, another hot region Nebbiolo purists should investigate is the ridiculously small region of Carema. This is the quintessential, rugged mountain wine territory, located at the foot of the Alps on the border of Piemonte and Valle d’ Aosta. Hands down, the most reputable producers in the region are Ferrando and the small cooperative of Produttori di Carema. Much like the famed Produttori del Barbaresco, Produttori di Carema is a producer of top quality Nebbiolo. Created in 1960, they are a small cooperative divided amongst 71 growers. Each grower rarely owns more than a measly ½ hectare of vines. These are vineyards planted on steep stone terraces that reflect the sun and maintain the heat of the day during the cool evenings of this northernmost region. They are the type of mountainous vineyards that can only be tended by caring hands.

Well, you might say the cat is out of the bag, and the best kept secret for those who appreciate the magic and allure of the noble Nebbiolo delivered with value has been published by Vinous. Antonio Galloni was absolutely correct in his recent posting and assessment stating, “..the Produttori di Carema cooperative has been on a tear in recent vintages.” And while all eyes are on the December arrival of the Produttori di Carema 2016 Carema Riserva for a mere $29.99, IWM has just received the final ten cases of the rare Produttori di Carema 2015 Carema Riserva Selezione 60th Anniversary bottle. This is the first and only time this rare Riserva will be produced. It is a selection of the very best fruit, aged an additional ten months longer than the regular Riserva, and finally placed in a commemorative bottle. A mere 250 cases were produced, and to say you have had this rustic Nebbiolo expression, would make you one of the few on the planet. Wines are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Be sure to lock in your 2016s as well, as we expect them to sell out before they arrive.

ADDITIONAL REVIEW AND NOTES:

“Over the last few years, Carema has really grown in stature, which is remarkable for an appellation that spans just 16 hectares of vineyards, in total. The long-established reference points, including Ferrando and the Produttori di Carema, are making better wines than ever, while a number of younger, newer estates like Sorpasso and Monte Maletto are rapidly ascending. This is an incredibly exciting time for consumers to be exploring the wines of Alto Piemonte and Valtellina.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

2015 Produttori di Carema Carema Riserva Selezione 60th Anniversary
Christopher Deas, Italian Wine Merchants: “[Tasted over 72 hours]. Twenty years ago, when IWM started carrying the wines of Alto Piemonte, we always recommended looking at the wines from this cool region in a warm, ripe vintage. The added fruit provides the body needed to match the vibrant acidity of these wild, mountain wines. Well, in 2015, that is exactly what we have, and it is the perfect vintage to mark the 60th Anniversary of this special and small cooperative. In fact, this is soft and inviting Nebbiolo, marked by sweet and succulent red fruit and nuances that cover much of the flavor spectrum. The nose will transport you to Piemonte and on the palate you can expect notes of wild strawberries, sour cherries, cranberry, citrus, potpourri, brown spice, tobacco leaf, leather, and forest floor. This is an elegant, and old fashioned Nebbiolo expression – the perfect wine for the thirsty traveler. Best of all, this is a wine that can be enjoyed today, especially with a two hour decant. Highly recommend.”

2016 Produttori di Carema Carema Riserva
95 Points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous: “The 2016 Carema Riserva is another knock-out effort from the Produttori di Carema, the local cooperative that has really been on fire these last few vintages. Open-knit and inviting, but with all the complexity that is so typical of the appellation, the 2016 is superb. Crushed flowers, mint, sweet tobacco, cedar and licorice are all woven together in a super-expressive Carema that offers tons of complexity in a relatively accessible style for a young wine from the appellation. The Riserva is a selection of the best casks in the cellar, with the wine aged for an added year in cask, so three years’ in neutral oak in total. That extra year in oak vis-à-vis the Classico does take with it some of the fruit while emphasizing more savory and mineral qualities. Power and finesse come together so well in this textbook Carema”
