Giacomo Conterno 2015 Trio Debuts! Barolo Arione, Barolo Cerretta, and Barolo Francia!
October 17, 2019
A Note from Sergio

Roberto Conterno, Giacomo Conterno's grandson and head of the estate, continues his grandfather's and his father's traditional practices. The cellar is big, filled with hulking botti, some of the biggest you'll find anywhere. That ineffable cellar scent hangs like a sweet muted fog. While tasting out of the barrel can be a dicey proposition--not every producer makes wines that taste good when that young--my experiences in Conterno's cellars are always good. Consistently good barrel tasting, like the ability to craft excellent wines in "off" vintages, is a sign of a genius winemaker. Tasting in Roberto's cellar, surrounded by those giant botti that loom like baby elephants in a corral, is like getting a preview of heaven.

Today, I'm proud to debut three releases from Giacomo Conterno, two new vintages of old favorites and one new wine. These are all bottles that I met first in Roberto's spick-and-span cellar, just us talking quietly, the stone walls and terra-cotta floor amplifying our voices. 2015 gave Barolo makers--and Barolo lovers--a rare gift: a perfect growing year that ended in incredibly ripe, perfectly balanced grapes. There's nothing like a benchmark Barolo from Giacomo Conterno and today's trio gives you three very different interpretations. The '15 Barolo Francia is all about myriad layers that change every moment. The '15 Barolo Ceretta is all about muscular elegance, and the '15 Barolo Arione is all about lush power--no true Barolo enthusiast wants to miss this new Giacomo Conterno bottling.

Finally, in case you missed it yesterday, this month sees IWM's 20th anniversary, and you're invited to the party--I hope to toast with you this Halloween!

Giacomo Conterno Barolo Francia 2015 750ml
Giacomo Conterno Barolo Francia 2015 750ml
Price: $359.00

Giacomo Conterno’s 2015 Barolo Francia is stunning, and its seamless, ethereal, and complex character embodies the greatness of its vintage. Layers and layers of red and blue fruits, warm spices, tarry earth, blood orange zest, rose petals, and crushed river rocks unfold from the glass in this Barolo’s kaleidoscopic nose. Finessed and detailed, this wine unspools its myriad notes with a deft touch, while its chewy tannins and vivid acidity provide the ideal framework for this age-worthy, elegant wine. Barolo Francia, formerly called “Barolo Cascina Francia,” gets its name from the superb 35-acre vineyard (about ten acres planted to Nebbiolo) that also provides grapes for Conterno’s masterful Monfortino. The estate makes its Barolo Francia with natural yeasts, temperature-controlled fermentation, and a lengthy maceration of 3-4 weeks; the wine ages in large Slavonian botti and in bottle for a total of four years. more info
Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cerretta 2015 750ml
Giacomo Conterno Barolo Cerretta 2015 750ml
Price: $359.00

Alluring rose petals, Christmas spices, balsamic herbs, baked earth, and new leather frame the succulent red and blue fruits in Giacomo Conterno’s compelling, sneakily powerful ’15 Barolo Cerretta. This wine shows a captivating melding of ripe fruits, savory underpinnings, chewy tannins, and electric acidity. The muscular ‘15 Cerretta rolls across the palate, building in power and complexity as it showcases its breathtaking balance that extends into the wine’s lingering finish. In 2008, Giacomo Conterno purchased its Cerretta holdings (two separate vineyards that total 7.4 acres), releasing its first wine with the 2010 vintage. The estate makes its Barolo Cerretta with natural yeasts, temperature-controlled fermentation, and a lengthy maceration of 3-4 weeks; the wine ages in large Slavonian botti and in bottle for a total of four years. more info
Giacomo Conterno Barolo Arione 2015 750ml
Giacomo Conterno Barolo Arione 2015 750ml
Price: $359.00

2015 sees the inaugural vintage of Giacomo Conterno’s Barolo Arione, the famed nearly 22-acre vineyard that neighbors Conterno’s Francia plot, and this 2015 bottling is stunning. Layers of juicy cherries and sun-warmed berries leap from the glass, complemented by tarry earth, new leather, pencil lead, spicy tobacco, and subtle rose petals. The dense and earthy ’15 Barolo Arione is all about power, but for all its seductive “oomph,” this wine showcases the elegance of the Conterno house style in its impeccably balanced chewy tannins, electric acidity, savory minerals, and sweet floral lift. The estate makes its Barolo Arione with natural yeasts, temperature-controlled fermentation, and a lengthy maceration of 3-4 weeks; the wine ages in large Slavonian botti and in bottle for a total of four years. Giacomo Conterno made only three botti of its Barolo Arione, one of which became part of the estate’s Barolo Monfortino Riserva. more info
