Perfect Mature Sammarco, Autumn’s Ideal Rosato, and Vosne-Romanée from Hudelot Noëllat
October 20, 2015
A Note from Sergio

Wine lovers are like any other fan or collector; getting caught up in the stuff that's supposed to be new or better, we sometimes forget about the usual suspects. The thing is, though, when I think back to the wines that the industry said were "new and better" ten, five, even a couple of years ago, not many of them have stuck--most of them have been weeded out by the market. Going to events and tastings, I'm reminded that as much as I like discovering something I've never tasted before, I really love rediscovering the wines I've known and loved for a long time. Even better, I love recollecting wines that the industry dismissed when they hit the market but I knew would be great.
This week, I'm happy to bring you one of my favorite recent I-told-you-so wines: Castello dei Rampolla Sammarco, the first biodynamically made Super Tuscan, from the challenging 2005 vintage. Although critics and industry people love Castello dei Rampolla, no one really "got" this Sammarco when it came out in 2009. People disregarded it as pretty but lacking structure; they mistook its grace for immediate drinkability and its nuance for a lack of power. Time has shown the '05 Sammarco to be a serious, finessed wine that's both intellectual and visceral; whether you like wines that go for the gut or appeal to the head, you'll enjoy this. A bottle of Sammarco may be a known entity, but you can still enjoy it like it's the very first time, and this '05 is just starting to hit its stride today.

Along with this great Super-Tuscan, I'm delighted to present a new allocation of Raffaele Palma's serious, steely rosato Salicerchi. Rosé time doesn't end with Labor Day, and this wine is a full-throttle rosato that makes food sing. Finally, I'm very happy to spotlight an exceptional Vosne-Romanée from Hudelot Noëllat, the estate's 2011 Vosne-Romanée Beaux Monts. This appellation should be no stranger to serious Burgundy lovers, and this vintage feels like drinking a perfect string quartet: it's the epitome of restraint and sophistication.
