A Note from Sergio
A tall man with long, horse-riding legs and a big head covered in snow-white hair, Vincenzo Abbruzzese towers over most people. From his careful choice of words to his meticulously grown vines, Vincenzo comes across as controlled and thoughtful, and the wines he makes reflect these traits; they're aristocratic, subtle beauties that unfold slowly and precisely. After years of spending time at the Valdicava estate as a kid and a young adult, Vincenzo assumed control of the estate from his grandfather, Bramante, in 1987. Just a few years later, Valdicava's 1990 Brunello release caught the notice of the wine's burgeoning fans, and these days, Valdicava has made hardcore fans who have, in turn, created a kind of cult around Valdicava Brunello.Today's Featured Sections Include:
Today, I'm very pleased to debut Valdicava's excellent 2015 Brunello. 2015 was an astonishingly good growing year across most of Italy, and it gifted Montalcino's producers with the kind of weather that they dream about--and they have given us the kind of Brunello we dream about! A super-cold, very snowy winter filled the water reserves, which the vines needed in the super-hot, sunny month of July, and from bud-break to harvest, 2015 gave the ripening Sangiovese Grosso grapes a very, very long hang time. 2015 was a perfectly proportioned growing year, in short--and Vincenzo turned the vintage's raw materials into a perfectly balanced, harmonious Brunello that feels seamless, powerful, finessed, and complete.
You'll want to cellar Valdicava's '15 Brunello for a couple of years, but then it's going to drink for decades to come--it's a showstopping wine. Enjoy!
