Three Approachable, Affordable 2016 Aldo Conterno Reds
October 24, 2019
A Note from Sergio

Aldo Conterno was a patient, committed man and a patient, committed winemaker. You could taste Aldo's dedication in his famed Barolo Riserva Granbussia, his cru Barolo, or his traditional cuvée Barolo. But it wasn't just his marquee wines. You could also sense Aldo's vision and his earnestness in his Barbera d'Alba, his Langhe Nebbiolo or his Langhe Rosso. Aldo passed away a few years ago, but he raised his sons with his same dedication, and today, his three sons are furthering the work of their late, great father. The family-run Aldo Conterno estate wears its founder's name well, and you can taste the love of the Langhe in the full range of Aldo's wines, from the everyday Rosso to the collector Barolo Granbussia.

Today, I'm very proud to present a trio of new Aldo Conterno releases, 2016 Conca Tre Pile Barbera d'Alba, Langhe Rosso, and Langhe Nebbiolo Il Favot. Each of these wines embodies the attention to detail that distinguishes the wines of Poderi Aldo Conterno, and each of these wines over-delivers on its relatively affordable pricing! Even the people who make the best Barolos in the world don't drink them every night of the week. Barolos are special occasion wines, and barolisti need easy-drinking reds and opulent whites too. Aldo Conterno's plush, vibrant Barbera, the estate's complex, terroir-driven Rosso, and its delicious, velvety Langhe Nebbiolo fill those needs.

Open one of these bottles and drink as the Conterno family does--with style, with tradition, and with passion!

Poderi Aldo Conterno Langhe Rosso 2016 750ml
Poderi Aldo Conterno Langhe Rosso 2016 750ml
Price: $29.99

Juicy cherries and brooding berries cavort with peppery spices, crushed wild herbs, warm earth, wildflowers and tobacco in the muscular, rich ’16 Langhe Rosso. Chewy tannins meet electric acidity, while savory underpinnings complement the silky wine’s copious fruit. This is a food-friendly, highly pleasurable wine that drinks immediately yet has the structure to age for a few years. A blend of 80% old-vine Freisa, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot, Aldo Conterno’s Langhe Rosso, which has replaced the estate's famed Quartetto, is an incredible bottle of everyday red. Conterno harvests the grapes from vineyards in Bussia, then vinifies the wine in temperature-controlled stainless steel; this wine ages first in steel and finishes for a few months in barriques before bottling. more info
Poderi Aldo Conterno Langhe Nebbiolo Il Favot 2016 750ml
Poderi Aldo Conterno Langhe Nebbiolo Il Favot 2016 750ml
Price: $69.99

In the outstanding 2016 vintage, Aldo Conterno’s Il Favot Langhe Nebbiolo performs like a “baby Barolo.” Bursting with succulent red and blue fruits, new leather, licorice, rose petals, cigar wrapper and earth, this wine awards the senses with Barolo’s telltale perfumes and its ethereal mouth-feel. While not as structured as a Barolo, the ’16 Il Favot Langhe Nebbiolo nonetheless captures some of Barolo’s ethereal nature, filling the mouth with textured tannins as it slowly reveals myriad flavor notes and builds to a lingering finish. Deriving from younger Nebbiolo vines grown in various vineyards in Monforte d’Alba, the grapes ferment in stainless steel for about eight days, and the wine ages for five or six months in stainless steel, followed by eighteen months in barrique, all new. more info
