October 25, 2019
A Note from Sergio

Angelo Gaja is a big personality. He stands larger than life, and his deep voice carries across any room. While many great winemakers radiate a great presence, Angelo's feels somehow solid--his personality is almost three-dimensional, it's so commanding. From this big man comes big wines; Gaja's famed Barbaresco trio, his Sperss and his Darmagi, his Chardonnay Gaia & Rey and Chardonnay Rossj Bass make you sit up and take notice. None of these wines is reticent, and that's one of the many aspects that draws people to them, makes people love them, and makes ardent fans out of regular wine-lovers.

Today, I'm very pleased to celebrate Gaja's big personality and the big love his wines inspire with a big, wonderful offer--twenty of Gaja's outrageously pleasurable, beautifully made wines. You'll find the Barbarescos that Gaja made famous, his world-class Piemonte whites, his two spins on Barolo, and wines that date from before Angelo added his Barbera to his Barbaresco and Barolo, during the time when these wines couldn't be called Barbaresco or Barolo, and the time when they returned to traditional DOCG wines. No matter what draws you to a wine, Gaja has something to meet your taste, and this offer has at least one bottle you will fiercely love.

Gaja makes big, bold, beautiful wines, and this offer does him, his wines, and their power justice. You won't often find this many bottles of Gaja all in one place with 20% off; don't miss this offer!

Gaja Chardonnay Gaia & Rey 1988 750ml
Gaja Chardonnay Gaia & Rey 1988 750ml
Price: $499.00

Bursting with caramel, orchard fruits, potpourri, baking spices and crushed river rocks, this mature Gaia & Rey marries its tertiary notes with its freshness. This golden wine unfurls on the palate with a silky feel to offer a bevy of complex notes; its saline minerality offsets its inner perfume, and its slightly oxidized mouth-feel complements its vibrant acidity. This is a fine aged Chardonnay that does its maker, Angelo Gaja, proud. Deriving from Gaja’s almost nine-acre Treiso vineyard planted in 1979, this wine is named for Angelo Gaja’s oldest daughter, Gaia Gaja, and his grandmother, Clotilde Rey. Gaia & Rey ferments with naturally occurring yeasts, and ages for 6-8 months in oak barrels. This is an intensely age-worthy wine, developing tertiary notes of nuts, butter and caramel with age. more info
Gaja Chardonnay Gaia & Rey 1984 750ml
Gaja Chardonnay Gaia & Rey 1984 750ml
Price: $499.00

A hedonistic wine with lusciously ripe flavors of guava, tangerine, honey, marzipan and oak spice, Gaia & Rey isn’t merely the best Italian Chardonnay--it may also be the very best Italian white. Impressively chewy in the mouth, the concentrated, ripe fruit is perfectly balanced by lively acidity that holds through the long, lingering finish. From Angelo's first Chardonnay vineyard that’s named for his oldest daughter, Gaia Gaja, and his grandmother, Clotilde Rey, Gaia & Rey is fermented with naturally occurring yeasts found on the grape skins and in the winery, giving the wine an added touch of exoticism. Intensely age-worthy, as this wine matures, tertiary notes of nuts, butter and caramel appear, illustrating why Gaia & Rey is one of Italy’s most collectable white wines. more info
Gaja Sori San Lorenzo 2011 750ml
Gaja Sori San Lorenzo 2011 750ml
Price: $499.99

Elegant yet powerful, mineral-laden yet boasting succulent fruit, intense yet finessed, the ’11 Sorì San Lorenzo is simply exquisite. Brooding black and juicy red fruit bursts from the glass with notes of tar, licorice, saddle leather, fresh-cut herbs, smoke and wildflowers in this expressive wine. The ’11 Sorì San Lorenzo is somewhat more approachable than usual, but this wine’s epic tannic structure makes it beautifully age-worthy. The first of the crus to be bottled individually in 1967, Sorì San Lorenzo typically requires the most patience of the three Gaja cru bottlings, but its intense aromatics, velvety mouth-feel and sensuous, complex palate reward a wine-lover’s restraint. A blend of 95% Nebbiolo and the remainder Barbera, the grapes for this wine ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel; then the wine ages in a year each in barrique and botti before bottling. more info
Gaja Costa Russi Barbaresco 2013 750ml
Gaja Costa Russi Barbaresco 2013 750ml
Price: $529.99

Profound aromatics, seamless structure, breathtaking transparency, and a supple, sensual texture make this ’13 Costa Russi a knockout--and a terrific evocation of its benchmark vintage. Dark, juicy red and blue fruits rest in a framework of crushed lavender and roses, sun-warmed earth, wet river rocks, baking spices and cherry cordial in the stellar ’13 Costa Russi. Terrifically structured, this wine shows firm, sophisticated tannins offset by energetic acidity; deceptively powerful, this wine builds to a lingering, satisfying crescendo. The 11-acre Costa Russi vineyard, which sits alongside Sorì Tildìn in Roncagliette, takes its name from the word “costa,” which is the side of a hill that faces the sun and “Russi,” the name of the vineyard’s former owners. A mono-varietal Nebbiolo since 2013, the grapes for this wine ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel; then the wine ages in a year each of barrique and botti before bottling. more info
Gaja Sori San Lorenzo Barbaresco 2013 750ml
Gaja Sori San Lorenzo Barbaresco 2013 750ml
Price: $599.99

Classically structured, brooding, and powerful, the ’13 Sorì San Lorenzo is a towering expression of Nebbiolo. Pure red and blue fruits dance on a bed of fresh-cut herbs, potpourri, crushed rocks, tar and smoke. This is a finessed, gorgeous wine that unfurls on the palate with tantalizing precision as it builds to a lingering finish. The first of the crus to be bottled individually in 1967, Sorì San Lorenzo typically requires the most patience of the three Gaja cru bottlings, but its intense aromatics, velvety mouth-feel and sensuous, complex palate reward a wine-lover’s restraint. 2013 saw the bottling of Sorì San Lorenzo as a mono-varietal Nebbiolo, as Gaja omitted the Barbera component; the grapes for this wine ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel; then the wine ages for in a year each in barrique and botti before bottling. more info
Gaja Sori Tildin Barbaresco 2013 750ml
Gaja Sori Tildin Barbaresco 2013 750ml
Price: $599.99

Roses and violet petals guide the succulent, pure red fruits in the nose of this gracious, round Sorì Tildìn, and dark notes of licorice, truffles, and warm cigar wrapper provide a fitting complement. This wine is all about its texture; it wraps the palate with a silky feel that’s studded with chewy tannins that linger on the vibrant, persistent finish. The second single-vineyard Gaja expression to be bottled individually in 1970, Sorì Tildìn became a mono-varietal Nebbiolo in 2013, when the estate dropped the Barbera component that the wine had included since the 1996 vintage. The grapes for this wine ferment in temperature-controlled stainless steel; then the wine ages in a year each of barrique and botti before bottling. Of the three Gaja single-vineyard Barbaresco wines, Sorì Tildin displays the roundest tasting profile, with a rich body, subtle texture, and fine, ripe tannins; in great vintages this wine will develop for decades. more info

Gaja Costa Russi 2011 1.5L
Price: $1,099.00

Though situated right alongside Sorì Tildìn in Roncagliette, Costa Russi, the third cru Barbaresco to take its place in the portfolio in 1978, inspires terms like accessible, overt, and generous. The 11-acre Costa Russi vineyard takes its name from the word “costa,” which is the side of a hill that faces the sun and “Russi,” the name of the vineyard’s former owners. Delicate, elegant, refined and pure, Costa Russi’s notes of violets and blackberries gain support from notes of licorice, smoke, and a strong streak of minerality. Great structure, awe-inspiring balance and an attenuated finish mark this exceptional wine that could only come from Angelo Gaja. more info

Gaja Sori San Lorenzo 2011 3L
Price: $2,099.00

Gaja’s Sorì San Lorenzo is the dark one of the trio, a brooding and romantic Byronic hero. The first of the crus to be bottled individually in 1967, Sorì San Lorenzo typically requires the most patience of the three bottlings, but its intense aromatics, velvety mouth-feel and sensuous, complex palate reward a wine-lover’s restraint. Concentrated, powerful and masculine, Sorì San Lorenzo usually shows brambly fruit, smoke, espresso or mocha, and fresh herbs. It’s dense, layered, massive in complexity, and utterly swoon-worthy. more info
