Next week sees the fifteenth anniversary of when I founded Italian Wine Merchants. When I opened the shop in October of 1999--just about exactly Columbus Day--I had one very simple goal: to bring the very best wine to my clients. A lot has changed in those fifteen years. IWM has grown from just me and a few other guys working hard in Union Square to scores of employees, from cellar staff to portfolio managers to kitchen and event staff, and we've expanded to locations in Aspen and Hong Kong. We've expanded our business to include the Bottled Asset Fund, and our cellar has grown from a few dozen handpicked Italian producers to hundreds, expanding into wines from France, Spain, South America, and beyond.
But for all the changes I've seen and all the growth I'm grateful for, IWM's core commitment hasn't shifted. I still want to bring great wine to my clients. I want to help you enjoy your lives more by sharing really great wine. It's pretty simple, but I think it's a beautiful goal. I thank you for allowing me and allowing my staff at IWM to help you choose your wine. Wine brings people together, and I'm humbled that IWM is a part of your life.
Today, I'm very proud to offer almost twenty different vintages of Angelo Gaja's extraordinary long-aging Chardonnay, Gaia & Rey. Working directly with sources in Europe, I managed to score bottles of Angelo's inaugural vintage of this game-changing white, as well as many years between 1984 and the current 2012 vintage, and all of the bottles presented today are just gorgeous. Along with this offer, I'm delighted to present five bottlings of Bachey-Legros Burgundy; these are value wines whose price points will strain credulity. They taste too delicious to be $30-50 wines! Finally, I'm delighted to present a $14 bottle of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo made by a group of old friends. Sometimes you just want to drink something uncomplicated and tasty.
One final note, in honor of Columbus Day, IWM's store and offices will be closed on Monday, October 13. We hope you'll enjoy the day with your family, some wine, and maybe a toast to fifteen very good years!
