One of the finest Galatrona vintages yet, the 2015 layers pure red and blue fruits over melted chocolate, violet petals, smoky spices, pipe tobacco, and touches of menthol and herbs. At once ample and precise, this wine glides silkily, revealing an astonishing breadth of notes underpinned by a fine tannic structure. This Galatrona bottling is kaleidoscopic, shifting your perceptions at every turn to create a fascinating drinking experience. Best in about five years, this wine is ideal for drinkers with cellar space and patience. First created by Luca Sanjust in 1994, Galatrona’s Merlot grapes come from a single vineyard that sports clayey soils with shale and sandstone. The organically grown grapes macerate for about two weeks in temperature-controlled tanks, and the wine ages in barriques (one-third new) for 18 months before bottling and resting for about six months before release.

The Tenuta di Petrolo proudly sits on the site of an ancient Etruscan settlement where foundations of Roman buildings can still be seen. From these foundations rises the Torre di Galatrona, or the watchtower of the medieval Galatrona castle. It is in the shadow of this structure that a villa was built in the early 18th century, and the tower remains the physical and symbolic center of the winery that now lies here. Today Villa Petrolo welcomes visitors to an extensive retreat that revolves around their outstanding wine production. Of their 272 hectares, 31 are planted to vines and fall in the Colli Aretini zone of Chianti. The Bazzocchi family, owners of Petrolo since the 40s, stepped up their standards of production in the late 80s and now focuses on just two bottlings, Galatrona and Torrione.
